Unit 2 Test Study Guide
Vocabulary (Matching on test)
Photosynthesis- is the process by which plants and some other organisms
capture light energy and use it to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
Chlorophyll - a substance that gives chloroplasts their green color and
captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food.
Stoma – the small openings on the undersides of leaves through which
oxygen and carbon dioxide can move in and out of the leaf.
Transpiration – the process by which water is lost by the leaves
Chloroplast – a structure in the cells of plants and some other organisms that
contains chlorophyll that is used in photosynthesis
Glucose – a sugar made by plants through photosynthesis that is used as
food for the plants. It is a major source of energy for human body cells as
well.
Trophic level - the energy levels or steps in a food chain or food
web: primary producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary
consumer etc.
Biomass – living or formerly living materials in an ecosystem
Producer – an organism that can make its own food ( plants and algae)
Consumer – and organism that obtains energy by feeding on other
organisms; depends on producers for its energy
Decomposer – an organism that breaks down the large molecules of food,
dead animals, animal body waste, ect. to make fresh soil
Respiration ( in plants) - plants intake carbon-dioxide and exhales oxygen
during the day as the plants gets energy through the photosynthesis process
in which the carbon-dioxide is converted into sugars using the sun light
energy, as this process uses carbon-dioxide and water, the resulting gas
oxygen is given out as a waste product.
Saprotroph - An organism that feeds on or gets nourishment from decaying
organic matter. (Fungus and bacteria)
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process that converts radiant energy in sunlight to
chemical energy that can be used by the organisms. Photosynthesis is carried
out by plants, algae and some bacteria.
For the test. You should know the formula for photosynthesis:
6H2O + 6CO2
sunlight
C6H12O6 + 6O2
chlorophyll
and be able to write in words what the formula means:
Six molecules of water (6H20) plus six molecules of carbon dioxide (6CO2), using
sunlight energy and chlorophyll, produce one molecule of glucose (C6H12O6) and six
molecules of oxygen (6O2).
You should also be able to identify the
reactants in the process ( water and carbon dioxide),
and the products ( glucose and oxygen).
FOOD WEBS
You need to remember that in food webs the arrow points in the direction of the
flow of energy.
In this example, the bald eagle eats the trout. Therefore, the energy transfers from
the trout to the eagle.
Microscopes ( This part of the test is Friday )
Know the parts and functions of the microscope
You have this study guide in your binder.
