Every morning 6:45A.M. – 7:20 AM By Appointment Instructor Name: Mike Todd Main Office: 720-423-6600 Attendance Line: 720-423-6649 Required Course Materials: Introductory Algebra MAT 090- Furnished by Instructor Notebook Paper, Calculator (after the first unit), Pencils (Pens are not allowed or acceptable), Eraser, Straight Edge Course Description: This course covers operations on real numbers, linear equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, slope, polynomials, factoring, and solving quadratic equations by factoring. Its main purpose is to prepare students to take their first college math course by emphasizing skills that were shown to be below what was required on the Accuplacer college placement test to be able to enter a college math class. Students will develop the following skills: Problem Solving, logical thinking, reading and writing skills, and ability to use the skills/operations mentioned in the first sentence. Applications Evaluation Methods and Class Management: to receive credit for this course you must finish all work with a D or better, turn your work in on time, and in the proper format, adhere to school attendance policies, and participate regularly in class. Students may not have any more than four unexcused absences per nine weeks and no more than four tardies (excused and unexcused) per semester. Four unexcused absences in one month or ten in one year constitutes a “habitual truancy”. Kinds of Class work: The types of works done in this class include but are not limited to lecture, class practice, demonstrations, homework, quizzes, tests and a research paper. Late Work: Students are allowed a minimum of two days for every day absent to make up missed work or make other arrangements. Remember my purpose is to provide opportunities to help your child to be successful. Grading: Homework will count 10% of your total grade. This is a small percentage of the grade, but doing the homework is important as it gives you the practice you need to succeed in this class. Quizzes, tests, class work, daily preparedness and the research paper will make up the other 90% of the grade. In order to learn mathematics efficiently, the student must be prepared to make errors. Diligent attention to the errors (REWORKING INCORRECT PROBLEMS) will result in steady and significant mathematical progress. DO NOT IGNORE MATH ERRORS! Each assignment is to be completed to the best of one's ability. You will be asked to justify your answers and for other ways you could have gotten the answer. Answers only are not acceptable. All explanations are to be answered in complete sentences for full credit. Grading Scale: 100-93% A 9 2-90% A87-89% B+ 83-86% B 82-80% B79-77% C+ 76-73% C 72-70% C69-60% D 59-0% F Plagiarism: Plagiarism is literary theft of another author’s ideas and/or exact words, without giving proper credit to the source in both the text of your essay and on the Works Cited sheet. This rule is true of direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries. Plagiarism is a serious ethical offense and may be grounds for the student’s failure in this class. Cheating of any kind is forbidden.
