Introduction
This conference is the second in a series which began with the highly successful
meeting at the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom in July 1996. The
overall aim of this meeting is to provide a forum for scientists, engineers and
decision and policy makers to meet and discuss the latest developments in this
field. It is hoped that this series of conferences will encourage international
collaboration between researchers, regulators and policy makers. In light of this,
the organisers welcome the participation of SATURN and TRAPOS both of which
represent important frameworks for urban air pollution research.
Venue
The conference will take place at the Computer Science School of the Technical
University of Madrid. Accommodation will be located in central Madrid.
Social Programme
A range of social activities will be organised to complement the conference.

Conference Topics
Urban air quality over the past few years has developed into a world-wide
concern and consequently scientific research in this field has increased
dramatically. It is recognised that high quality research is needed to provide
sound scientific basis for understanding the physical and chemical processes in
the urban atmosphere and for formulating and implementing air quality
management strategies. This conference will encourage discussion of the latest
research advances in measurement, modelling and management of urban air
quality. The topics for the conference will include:

Measurement and monitoring of urban air pollutants on a local and urban
scale

Sampling techniques and instrumentation

Analysis of air pollutants
•
Use of surface instrumentation for monitoring urban air quality and
meteorology
•
Emission models and inventories
•
Source apportionment studies

Urban scale modelling
•
Emergency urban and regional forecast modelling
•
Roadside air quality modelling including street canyons
•
Wind tunnel & physical modelling studies
•
Modelling validation & sensitivity studies
•
Urban canopy meteorology & chemistry
•
Applications of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Remote sensing and satellite data assimilation for urban air quality
•
Environmental and health impact of urban air pollution

Urban air quality management systems (AQMS) & decision support systems

Data integration into environmental models

Digest and Abstract Submission
300 word abstracts (no figures) should be submitted by 25 September 1998 using
one of the following methods;

If your abstract is accepted, you will be requested to submit an abstract of 2
pages with figures and diagrams by 18 January 1999. This abstract will be
reproduced in the Conference Proceedings which will be made available to each
participant at the start of the conference.
Publication of Proceedings
All authors will be invited to submit a paper which will be considered for
publication in a major international journal. Full details will be provided in the
programme and registration documents.
