Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai
WHAT WOULD we do without Hollywood for inspiration? For "Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai", does
take a lot from"American Pie".
As the film progresses you might want to ask `Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?' Because, while the
light-hearted comedy is fine by American ethos, in India the going could be tough.
The college scene is pretty much the same and so are the attitudes. While the girls may not
be into casual sex, they have no qualms about giving conflicting signals. The boys they think
a lot about it,
apart from other things like male bonding and planning for their future. And if the girls
have marriage at the end of a relationship, the boys certainly do not. At least not for another
five years!
It is one thing to be inspired by "American Pie", it is quite another to run parallel along the
feel of "Dil Chahta Hai". The director sometimes takes pot shots at the film and sometimes
goes along
with it. But the good thing is that even though it's a kind of rehash, at least it's nicely done.
The visuals, the locations, and the music (Shankar, Ehsan and Loy— lyrics, Javed Akhtar) go
well with the zestful nature of the film and have an energy that could be the film's redeeming
factors.
We have four heroes and the film is about how each one goes about getting involved with a
girl. There is the mandatory villain who taunts these four thick-as-thieves-friends, and as
always, the villain is the loser in the end.
Plus the rivalry is almost always about having the best looking girls or rather the lack of it as
it happens on a New Year Eve for the four — Ranjit (Prashant Chianani), Rahul (Amir Ali),
Bunty (Vaibhav) and Johnny (Yash Raj).
They are determined that they will find girls so that they can lose their virginity and find out
what sex is all about. The college stud (Tarun Anand) makes a deal with his sultry girlfriend,
Esha, (Payal) to break Ranjit's heart. For Esha it is no big deal because she says she can make
anyone fall in love with her pronto. With all her sashaying and slithering around, poor Ranjit
falls for her. And all his muddled feelings for her are discussed with Anu, who is in love with
him but keeps silent, with Ranjit never realising that true love is just close by.
Rahul has a girlfriend but can't do much with her as she is thinking of marriage and he is
not. Bunty understands the difference between lust and love and is sure that it is lust he is
looking for, while Johnny falls for his attractive lecturer, Stella, who is older than him by a few
years.
The film moves on from there to the end when all of them realise what love is, how they need
to make the distinction between something short-lived vs something more long lasting.
The situations hover between the realistic to the filmy, but a lot of
would go on between boys of that age.
the dialogue is what
A refreshing aspect of the film is the presence of several new faces, with a lot of them
performing with a degree of confidence.
Among the lot, Vaibhav who plays Bunty is cute and natural, while Prashant as Ranjit, the
volleyball captain, is beefy but appealing. Samita, who plays Anu, shows promise. There is a
lot of sexuality
that is apparent in the way the boys and girls interact which is probably what the director
Hanslal Mehta intended all along.
