Course Description
Introduction to the prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of
common musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Laboratory experiences emphasize
taping and bracing methods and techniques for preventing musculoskeletal
injuries/conditions. A 100 clock hour clinical observation component is required for
students that intend to apply for admission to the Athletic Training Education Program.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of:
 Organizational and administrative aspects of an athletic health care program
 Legal liability and insurance issues facing athletic trainers
 The importance of adequate health-related fitness for the prevention of injuries
 Potential dangers associated with the climate and environment
 Recognition and management of specific types of athletic-related injuries
 Preventative and functional bandaging and taping techniques
This course will deliver content contained in the Athletic Training Education Competencies.
Specific competencies and proficiencies for this course are identified in the KINE 2370
Competencies and Proficiencies (see syllabus page 3 -7).
Textbook and Supplies
Required:
Arnheim’s Principles of Athletic Training, 14th edition, Prentice, McGraw Hill
Exams
Four exams and will be given in this course. The final exam will not be comprehensive.
In addition, four skill tests will be given.
Evaluation Example
Exams: 100 points each x 3= 300 points
Worksheets 25Pts each x
Grading
A = 90 – 100% (450-500 points)
B = 80 – 89.9% (400-449.5 points)
C = 70 – 79.9% (350-399.5 points)
D = 60 – 69.9% (300-349.5 points)
F = 59.9% or less (299.5 points or less)

Missed Test Policy
The instructor must be informed prior to a missed test. If possible, the test will be taken
in advance. An excused absence will allow the student to make up the test within 1 week of the
test date. You will be asked to bring a proof of your excuse. An unexcused absence will not
allow the student to make up the test. All work not completed within 1 week will be scored as a
zero.
Acceptable Excuses:
 Unforeseeable sickness/ injury
 Unforeseeable family emergency
 School sponsored travel (must notify the instructor before exam date)
 Other excuses approved by an instructor before class period.
Incomplete Coursework:
To designate a student’s work in a course as incomplete at the end of a term, instructors record
the incomplete grade (I). Students may receive this grade only when serious illness, hardship,
death in the immediate family, or military service during the semester in which they are registered
prevents them from completing course requirements. In addition, to receive an incomplete, a
student must have completed a majority of the course’s major requirements.
Students who have filed an application for graduation are not eligible for a grade of Incomplete.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty will result in a course grade of F and be handled as outlined in
UTPB’s "Student Conduct and Discipline" found at

Digital Courtesy
Cellular telephones should be on vibrate or silent mode during class to insure an
interruption-free class. Talking on the phone while in class is not permitted. Only phone calls
considered to constitute emergencies should be taken during class, and then you are expected to
leave the classroom to talk..
Drop Policy
If a student is unable to complete the course, the last day to drop/withdraw is March 24,
2014. This procedure must be completed by the student through UTPB’s Registrar’s Office.
Failure to complete the course or this procedure may result in the student receiving a grade of
“F”.
