The Muscular System Terms Temporalis - broad, fan-shaped muscle on each side of the head, superior to the zygomatic arch so it covers much of the temporal bone Deltoid - triangular muscle covering the joint of the shoulder Gluteus Maximus - the broad, thick, outermost muscle of the buttocks, involved in the rotation and extension of the thigh Soleus - muscle in the calf of the leg, behind the gastrocnemius muscle, that helps extend the foot forward Achilles Tendon - tendon joining the calf muscles to the heel bone Frontalis - frontal belly is muscle which covers parts of the skull Trapezius - flat muscle on each side of the upper and back part of the neck Pectoralis Major - either of two muscles on each side of the upper and anterior part of the thorax Serratus Anterior - muscle that originates on the surface of the 1st to 8th ribs at the side of the chest and inserts along the entire anterior length of the medial border of the scapula Vastus Medialis - an extensor muscle located medially in the thigh that extends the knee Tibialis Anterior - originates in the upper two-thirds of the surface of the tibia; acts to dorsiflex and invert the foot Gastrocnemius - largest muscle in the calf; action of which extends the foot, raises the heel, and assists in bending the knee Orbicularis Oculi - muscle in the face that closes the eyelids Sternocleidomastoid - thick muscle on each side of the neck, the action of which assists in bending the head and neck Orbicularis Oris - complex of muscles in the lips that encircles the mouth Brachioradialis - muscle of the forearm that flexes the forearm at the elbow Masseter - short, thick, masticatory muscle, the action of which assists in closing the jaws by raising the mandible or lower jaw. Biceps Brachii - either of two flexor muscles, located in the front of the upper arm Rectus Abdominis - paired muscle running vertically on each side of the anterior wall, also known as abdominals Flexor Carpi Ulnaris - muscle of the human forearm that acts to flex and (Ulna) adduct the hand Adductor Longus - adductor muscles of the hip, its main function is to adduct the thigh Sartorius - narrow muscle extending obliquely from the front of the hip to the inner side of the tibia External Oblique - is the largest and the most superficial (outermost) of the three flat muscles of the lateral anterior abdomen Flexor Carpi Radialis - muscle of the human forearm that acts to flex and (radial) abduct the hand Gracilis - muscle in the inner side of the thigh Rectus Femoris - muscles of the iliac and anterior femoral regions; visible near the center of the thigh Vastus Lateralis - the largest part of the quadriceps; attaches to the outer border of the patella Peroneus Longus - superficial muscle in the lateral compartment of the leg, and acts to evert and plantar flex the ankle Occipitals - innervated by the facial nerve and its function is to move the scalp back Semispinalis Capitis - situated at the upper and back part of the neck, deep to the splenius Infraspinatus - a thick triangular muscle, which occupies the chief part of the infraspinatus fossa Extensor Carpi Radialis - five main muscles that control movements at the wrist; starting on the lateral side of the humerus, and attaching to the base of the second metacarpal Teres Major - one of seven scapular muscles; thick but somewhat flattened muscle, innervated by the lower subscapular nerve Triceps Brachii - three-headed muscle of the arm; is the large muscle on the back of the upper limb Extensor Carpi Ulnaris - muscle located on the ulnar side of the forearm; it acts to extend and adduct at the carpus/wrist Biceps Femoris - located on the back of the thigh and assisting in bending the leg. Gluteus Medius - muscle of the buttocks lying between the gluteus maximus and the gluteus minimus, involved in the abduction of the thigh Semitendinosus - long superficial muscle in the back of the thigh; it is one of the hamstrings Semimembranosus - muscle in the back of the thigh.; it is the most medial of the three hamstring muscles.
