Clutch size in populations and species of cnemidophorines (Squamata: Teiidae) on the eastern coast of
Brazil
Provedor de dados: 42
Autores: MENEZES,VANDERLAINE A.; ROCHA,CARLOS F.D.
We analyzed some reproductive aspects of 16 coastal populations, belonging to five lizard species (A. ocellifera, A. abaetensis, A.
nativo, A. littoralis and C. lacertoides) from different restinga habitats along the eastern coast of Brazil. This study aimed to
evaluate to what extent the reproductive aspects vary geographically and among species. For each female, we recorded the number
of vitellogenic follicles, size and color of the largest follicle, presence and size of corpora lutea, and number and size of oviductal
eggs. Clutch size of almost all coastal populations/species of Ameivula had little variation and most clutches were composed of
two eggs. There was a significant relationship between female size and the mean clutch size when females from...

On clutch size and hatching success of the South American turtles Podocnemis expansa (Schweigger,
1812) and P. unifilis Troschel, 1848 (Testudines, Podocnemididae)
Provedor de dados: 42
Autores: Vanzolini,Paulo Emilio.
Data on clutch size and hatching success of P. expansa were gathered for seven beaches traditionally used by the species and
re-analyzed statistically by means of regression analysis, of the number of eggs on the number of females (or nests) and of the
number of young on the number of eggs. All regressions were linear, passed through the origin and had excellent fits. Average
clutch size varied from 75 to 123, and presented geographic differentiation: (i) Rio Orinoco, (ii) Rio Trombetas + Rio Branco and
(iii) Rio Juruá + Rio Purus. Average hatching success was ca. 83%. In P. unifilis there was also geographic variation in clutch
size, the Iquitos area showing the highest values. Hatching success of P. unifilis was uniformly high: only one sample, from...

Reproductive modes and fecundity of an assemblage of anuran amphibians in the Atlantic rainforest,
Brazil
Provedor de dados: 76
Autores: Hartmann,Marilia T; Hartmann,Paulo A; Haddad,Célio F. B.
Reproductive modes and size-fecundity relationships are described for anurans from Picinguaba, a region of Atlantic rainforest on
the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We observed 13 reproductive modes, confirming a high diversity of modes in
the Atlantic rainforest. This diversity of reproductive modes reflects the successful use of diversified and humid microhabitats by
anurans in this biome. We measured the snout-vent length of 715 specimens of 40 species of anurans. The size-fecundity
relationship of 12 species was analyzed. Female snout-vent lengths explained between 57% and 81% of clutch size variation.
Anurans with aquatic modes laid more eggs than those with terrestrial or arboreal modes. Larger eggs were deposited by species
with...

Capacidade reprodutiva de Bothrops jararaca (Serpentes, Viperidae)
Provedor de dados: 76
Autores: Janeiro-Cinquini,Thélia Rosana Forte.
The relationship between female body size and egg number was examined in the snake Bothrops jararaca (Wied, 1924). Some
authors have demonstrated that the estimated clutch size may be affected by the inclusion or exclusion of dead neonates or
non-developed eggs. The reproductive system of 254 mature females newly arrived from nature was examined and 29.55% (n=75)
had eggs in the oviducts in different stages of embryonic development. The presence of atresic eggs was observed in 34.5% of
those females. A significant difference was observed in the number of eggs in the right and left oviducts (t=9.48, P<0.001), but
not in the number of atresic eggs (t=1.110, P=0.278). The correlation of female body size and egg number was greater when all,
the normal and...

Breeding biology and reproductive success of Polystictus superciliaris (Aves: Tyrannidae), an
uncommon tyrant-flycatcher endemic to the highlands of eastern Brazil
Provedor de dados: 103
Autores: Hoffmann,Diego; Rodrigues,Marcos.
Polystictus superciliaris (Wied, 1831) is a small tyrant-flycatcher endemic to mountaintops in the highlands of eastern Brazil. In
this paper we present the first description of the breeding biology of P. superciliaris and estimate its reproductive success from a
population inhabiting rocky outcrops. This study was conducted during 2005 in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Rola Moça,
municipality of Nova Lima (20°03'S, 44°00'W), state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Fourteen pairs of P. superciliaris were
banded and monitored. The onset of the breeding season in 2005 was assumed to have been sometime before the 26th of July,
while it was assumed to have ended on the 23rd of November based on the last observation of a successful brood. Clutch size
was...

Reproductive and fat body cycles of Tropidurus hispidus and Tropidurus semitaeniatus (Squamata,
Tropiduridae) in a caatinga area of northeastern Brazil
Provedor de dados: 97
Autores: RIBEIRO,LEONARDO B.; SILVA,NAISANDRA B.; FREIRE,ELIZA M. X.
This study assessed the reproductive and fat body cycles of Tropidurus hispidus (Spix, 1825) and T. semitaeniatus (Spix, 1825) in
an area of caatinga in the Serido of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, from October 2006 to May 2008. In both species, the females
were reproductively active from the middle of the dry season to the beginning of the rainy season. Female reproductive activity
was influenced by precipitation, whereas males exhibited spermatozoa in their testes throughout the year, and their reproductive
activity was not related to any of the climatic variables analyzed. Mean clutch size (± SD) was 8.1 ± 2.0 and 2.1 ± 0.6 eggs in T.
hispidus and T. semitaeniatus, respectively, and was significantly related to female body size only in T. hispidus. The...

Body size, female reproduction and sexual dimorphism in the lizard Ameiva ameiva (Teiidae) in a
restinga of southeastern Brazil
Provedor de dados: 104
Autores: Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
In this study 57 specimens of the lizard Ameiva ameiva (Linnaeus, 1758) collected in the restinga at Barra de Maricá, in the state
of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, were analyzed to investigate size relations and reproduction (in females) and sexual
dimorphism of this population. We answered the following questions: 1) what is the minimum reproductive body size in females?
2) what is the average clutch size and 3) how is clutch size related to body size? 4) Are body and head sizes sexually dimorphic?
Mean clutch size was 6.7 ± 2.1 eggs and was positively correlated with female body size. Sexual dimorphism favoring males was
found: adult mean snout-vent length was great in males (124.2 ± 17.8 mm) than females (96.5 ± 23.1 mm SVL), and males were...
