Unit 1 (8000 B.C.E. to 600 B.C.E.) Key Concepts/IDs chps. 1-4
5. Ancient Egyptian civilization was shaped largely by geographic conditions. Ancient Egypt
was a male-dominated society centered on the pharaoh.
1. Egyptians centered their lives around The Nile. Having been split up into two parts,
Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt, the two kept in contact by use of the river for
communication and transport. (page 24)
2. Egyptians all relied on the King (Pharaoh). To people the Pharaoh was godlike and
powerful. (page 25)
3. Even though ancient Egypt is mainly dessert the Nile flowed through several other
channels that originated the land suitable for agriculture.(page 24)
4. Men were more allowed to go outdoors, while women usually stayed indoors so the
women had a more yellowish skin than men.(page 28)
5. A Pharaoh is a higher figure in the Egyptian society believed to be a reincarnation of
gods. Pharaohs maintained order among the civilization.
6. Due to the limited rain Egypt receives, the Nile River was essential for crops and
livestock, which helped Egypt prosper.
7. The Egyptians could use the Nile River to their advantage for farming. Because the river
overflowed into the bordering valley in the fall, by the time the river went back to its
normal level, farmers could easily crop in the moist soil. (25)
8. The most important cities were located upstream away from the Mediterranean. (24)
9. The term pharaoh comes from the Egyptian word meaning “palace.” The pharaoh was
basically the king, but the other Egyptians recognized them as “gods on earth.” (pg. 25)
10. Compared to other lifestyles, Ancient Egyptians’ way of life was unique. While some
were dependent on other countries through trade, Egypt kept to themselves, isolated in a
desert and were less likely to be invaded. (p. 24)
11. The civilization used a writing method called Hieroglyphics that was used in early time.
Hieroglyphics was made up of pictures that would help them communicate. (pg.26)
