Wisnu Barlianto,M.Si.Med, SpA (K) Strong winds and erratic weather happened in Malang for several weeks cause 20 up to 30 percent of infants have upper respiratory tract infections (ISPA/Infeksi Saluran pernafasan Atas). If the infection is acute, toddlers could be exposed to pneumonia. This regard was said by a pediatrician from Faculty of Medicine of Brawijaya University named Dr. dr. Wisnu barlianto, M.Si.Med, SpA (K). "Extreme weather as recent lead to decreased immune system and so bacteria and virus are easily enter the body. The upper respiratory tract infections that susceptible occured in babies are coughs and colds. To safeguard in order to avoid the upper respiratory tract infections, the Vice Dean I on Academic Affairs at Faculty of Medicine of Brawijaya University advised to maintain cleanliness and eating a balanced diet and so they can ensure adequate intake for toddlers' immune system. To keep the child's immune system, need to keep the intake of children with balancing on carbohydrate, protein and fat," said dr. Barlian. In addition to consume balanced diet, for infants also need to be immunized. The immunizations usually given are including Haemophillus Influenza vaccine for toddlers aged 2, 4, 6 and 15 months old. Besides, they are also need to be given an IPD (Invasive Pneumococal Disease) vaccine in aged seven months old until five years old. IPD vaccine is necessary to avoid pneumonia which are larger experienced by infants under two years old and elderly people especially above 65 years old. Dr. Barlian also mentioned that it is necessary to avoid upper respiratory tract infections, wearing masks and warm clothes are highly recommended particularly in facing extreme weather as recent.
