COURSE DESCRIPTION This course explores the relationship between counseling psychology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and psychotropic drugs. Brain neuroanatomy, various types of psychopharmacological agents, and their mechanisms are discussed. Students explore when treatment with psychotropic drugs is indicated, and effects and side effects of various types of psychotropic drugs. The class also provides an introductory overview of medical terminology relevant for psychotherapists and counseling psychologists. Students may be introduced to first aid in therapeutic practice and explore how to assess a variety of medical emergencies and how to react appropriately. The course may be presented as a one or two credit hours course focused on a particular aspect of psychopharmacology. Consequently, this course may be repeated for credit if content differs. LEARNING OUTCOMES The student is able to know the fundamentals of psychopharmacology (which drugs are helpful in which circumstances). The student is able to understand the basic characteristics of the different classes of psychotropic drugs. The student is able to explain the areas of effectiveness of psychotropic drugs in the main areas of psychopathology. The student is able to understand the influence of marketing and pharmacological. lobbying on the field of psychopharmacology and established habits of treatment. The student is able to explore fields of possible development in psychopharmacology. GRADE BREAKDOWN A grade point average (GPA) is calculated on all graded work taken at WVPU and is recorded on the student record. A 4 point system is used to calculate the GPA applying a grading scale of 100 percentage points. GRADUATE GRADING SCALE: Superior graduate work: A = 4 pts. (93-100), A- = 3.67 pts. (90-92) Satisfactory graduate Work: B+ = 3.33 (87-89), B = 3.0 pts. (83-86), B- = 2.67 (80-82) Work that is barely adequate as graduate-level performance: C = 2.0 pts. (70-79) Unsatisfactory work: F = 0.0 pts. (< 70) EVALUATION COMPONENTS NOTE 1: Midterm and final exams are mandatory for graduate courses. Midterm exams are held on Saturday and Sunday in week 4 and Final exams are held on Monday and Tuesday in week 0.
