Module 1 Unit 1 Qualities of a Good Leader
Purpose of this session: To identify qualities of a good leader
Audience: Members of the PTCs of all the schools in the sector, including the headteacher and Pastor, the Executive Secretary of the Sector, This session should be run with
the Sector Education Officer, it is a collaborative training session.
Duration of the session: 5 hours 20mins (this unit can be split into two shorter sessions)

Why is leadership
important?

Participants will be able to recognise that there are different styles of leadership
They will understand that the involvement of staff is an essential element of good leadership
Participants will understand the difference between leadership, management and administration
Activity
Register, name labels, school name labels. Tables should be arranged in groups.
Participants sit in school groups. Greetings and presentations by participants
Outline the objectives. The main purpose – the student on the chair. Write timetable on
board.
Warm up activity to show confusion where there is no leader. Introduce participants to
the VVOB book ‘Roles, duties and Responsibilities of a School Management Team) school
leaders need to set the direction for the learning and development of both staff and
pupils, to redesign the organisation’s systems and structures in ways which suit the vision
and tasks, to manage the learning programme, and to do all those things in a
motivational, optimistic and enabling manner. How do we develop Learning Centred
Leadership?

Inventory Activity
Definition: ‘Schools are learning organisations where groups of people work together in
different ways to achieve shared goals.’ What makes a successful school? 6 main features
of successful schools. Activity using information on page 14
Chapter 2 VVOB
Participatory Management – Role Play activity to illustrate the two different
management styles – ‘Top Down’ and ‘Participatory’
Ideas for role play – allocate roles to be
played.
In Participatory Management it is important that there are clearly defined roles and
responsibilities for each person. Activity based on the information on pages 20-25 the
web which links together all the people in the school – headteacher, Responsible,
teachers, parents PTC , Learners, sector and district staff, community leaders. Identify the
leaders and managers in the school, list their qualities and responsibilities
Emphasise the importance of regular school self –evaluation and ‘keeping your finger on
the pulse’
