Student Technologies Quick Start Guide - 2016-2017 Student Portal: All BCC student technologies can be accessed by going to the BCC Moodle webpage (http://moodle.brunswickcc.edu), clicking on BCC Sites, then choosing the Student Portal. Links to password management, Moodle, student email, WebAdvisor, and DolphinAlert are on the portal page. IMPORTANT: Please check the portal frequently for updates or latest technical news. Login/Username/Password Notes To determine your username, go to https://wa.brunswickcc.edu and click on the “Account Information” link in the lower right corner and follow the prompts. Use only the username for all sites except email which requires the full email address. Accounts are created with a temporary password using the form “first two letters of your last name” with the first letter capitalize plus your “6-digit birthday” – for example, Br010299 would be the temporary password for someone with the last name Brunswick whose birthday is January 2, 1999. Carefully follow the directions on the Student Portal to set up your password account and change your password. Contact Distance Learning with password or technical issues. Email: [email protected] or stop by the office in room A-212. Password Management Enrollment: All students must complete the setup of their account on the BCC Password Reset website. The password site link is available on the student portal. The steps for setting up your account and changing password are on the student portal page. Please read the directions completely. After 3 bad attempts, you will be locked out for 30 minutes before being able to continue. Select your security questions and answers carefully. IMPORTANT: Passwords must be changed every 90 days or they expire and you will be locked out. If your password has expired and you have set your security questions, you may use RESET Password to reset your password. Campus Computer Logins: Usernames and passwords are the same as used in WebAdvisor and other BCC technologies. Online Technologies Orientation: This guide is not intended to provide all information you need to be successful. Complete information may be found in the BCC Student Technologies Orientation. To access the orientation, go to Moodle via the student portal. On the Moodle homepage, click on the Student Technologies Orientation link in the right column or in the dropdown menu across the top of the page. NOTE: No login/password is required for the orientation. WebAdvisor: WebAdvisor is a password-protected Web site that provides students access to their schedules, final grades, registration, financial aid, and other BCC information. A link is also available on the student portal and tutorials and guides are available. Student Email: Your email account may be accessed by using the links provided on the student portal and Moodle webpages. On public computers, please make sure to log out when finished and do not stay signed in. Username must be entered using the format [email protected] If you have a personal/other gmail account, you may prefer to either “add” this email address or log out of your existing account when accessing your student email. Search “using more than one gmail/google account” for more information. Practice safe computing. Be sure to log off all websites and computers when finished and do not share your login information. It is a violation of BCC’s computer policies to share your username or password with others or to attempt to obtain another person’s login information. Moodle: Moodle is BCC’s learning management system and is used for both online and traditional courses. A user guide is available in the Student Tech Orientation. 24-hour help is provided by the NC Community College System and is available for Moodle only. Phone: 1-866-517-3537 D0LPHIN Alert: Dolphin Alert is BCC’s alert notification system for general information and emergencies. To sign up for notifications or for more information, go to the Dolphin Alert page which is linked on the MyBCC webpage and the student portal. Dolphin Alert is powered by ReGroup. Supplemental Websites Some courses require a code to access an online supplement for the course (MyMathLab, Mastering Biology, Mastering Chemistry, etc.). The website publisher provides the support for the access it sells to students by providing a help desk that can be reached online, by phone, or by email. BCC distance learning staff members do not have access to these sites and cannot provide technical support. Tips – Tests are best taken using a “land-line” Internet connection. Campus computers are available if you normally use wireless Internet for your courses. Do not disconnect BCC computers to connect your personal computer to the network. For online courses, allow adequate time each week to complete your classwork. Online does not mean “any time” as assignments must be completed by their due dates. Questions? Contact the Distance Learning via email or stopping by the office, Building A, Room 212.
