The Importance of knowing what to feed your Guinea Pig In the wild Guinea pigs feed on grasses, plants, vegetables and crops. However our furry friends are not in the wild anymore, so it is very important for us to be providing the right foods. Guinea pigs need high levels of fiber in their diet, this can be found in good quality hay. Feeding hay alongside your normal food is vital for keeping teeth and digestive system healthy. Just like humans, Guinea pigs can't produce their own vitamin C, so they need to have it in their diet. Without enough Vitamin C the body is vulnerable to Scurvy which can lead to bone and tissue deficiencies. It can also lead to blood clotting problems and issues with skin and joints. Vitamin C deficiency is common in Guinea pigs, even if they are being fed a high Vit C diet. It can be caused by other illness or physical problems (possibly dental) which cause the Guinea pig not to eat enough. Vit C deficiency can be prevented and treated by a good Vit C diet and routine supplements of Vit C in their water. By feeding your Guinea pig with the right food will help for a good immune system, strong bones, healthy digestive and good teeth.
