Compound Words and Contractions
Focus
Rule
• A compound word is made
of two words. Sometimes it
uses each word’s meaning,
but sometimes it has a new
meaning.
Example
• A birdhouse is a house for a
bird. A butterfly is not a fly
made of butter.
• A contraction joins two words
using an apostrophe. The
apostrophe (’) takes the place
of missing letters.
• I will not go. I won’t go.
