MAIN CONCEPT DISCUSSIONS
What factors do you think contributed to the migrations of early people?
Do you think that all changes that took place during the Old Stone Age, the New Stone Age, and
the time of early civilizations were the result of cultural diffusion? How?
People in many early civilizations established belief systems that became an important force in
shaping their societies. Compare the influence of religion on the ancient civilizations we
covered in this unit.
To maintain control over a vast empire, it was vital that a ruler be well-respected. Based on the
empires of the ancient Middle East, Egypt and China, what characteristics do you think made
the leaders you have learned about most successful?
Consider the history of empire-building in China, Egypt, and the Middle East. In which cases
did the civilization endure even as power changed hands? In which did the end of power lead to
the end of the civilization?
