N5- Unit 1 MO4- Reproduction, variation, inheritance Sexual reproduction in animals 1-What is the biological name given to Gametes sex cells? 2-Meaning of haploid? A cell which nucleus contains only 1 set of chromosomes. In animals, only gametes are haploid. 3-Biological name of an organ Gonad producing sex cells? 4-Male gamete - name - sperm - features - has head and tail section and many mitochondrion - site of production - testes 5-Female gamete - name - egg or ovum - features - has a large store of food in its cytoplasm - site of production - ovaries 6-Identify the main parts of the male reproductive system. 1- Penis: allows internal fertilisation 2- Sperm duct: carries sperm from testes to penis 3- Testes: male gonad where sperm is produced. 7-Identify the main parts of the female reproductive system. 1- Ovary: female gonad: produces and releases eggs. 2- Oviduct: collects egg and push it toward uterus with the beating of hair-like cilia. 3- Uterus: where the egg implants and develops 4- Vagina: where sperm is deposited 8-What is fertilization? 9-Where does fertilization take place in land animals? It is the fusion of the sperm nucleus with the egg nucleus. In the oviduct of the female reproductive system. 10-Where does fertilization take place in fish? 11-What is a zygote? Sexual reproduction in Plants 12-Identify and describe the function of the parts of a flower 13- What is pollination? 13- Describe the growth of the pollen tube and the fusion of gametes. In the water, it is external fertilisation (outside of the body as the eggs are deposited before being coated with sperm) The first diploid cell after fusion of the haploid gametes. 1- Anther: produce male gamete (sex cell) 2- Stigma: sticky platform on which pollen is deposited. 3- ovary: produces ovule containing female gamete 4- Nectary: produce nectar (sugary liquid to attract pollinator) 5 - Petal: attract pollinators + protection of sexual organs When a pollen grain is transferred from an anther to a stigma. After landing on the stigma, the pollen grain germinates, i.e. it grows a pollen tube which eventually reaches the ovule. The male gamete travels down the pollen tube to fuse with the female gamete to form the zygote (Fertilisation)
