Cytology
Magazine
Anderson, IN: Biology
students at the TechnoPlaza
in Anderson, Indiana are
about to begin a new project.
During the current six weeks,
the students will develop and
design their own scientific
magazine, called Cytology
Magazine. The magazine will
include articles, pictures,
and advertisements about the
cell and its various
organelles.
The format for the magazine
is as follows:
- Cover
with
title,
date,
picture,
and
article
teasers.
- Table of contents.
- Letter to/from the
editor.
- A separate article
that summarizes each
of the following:
o Prokaryote vs.
eukaryote
o Animal Cell vs.
plant cell
o Plasma membrane
o Nucleus
o Nucleolus
o Ribosome
o Cytoplasm
o Endoplasmic
reticulum (rough
and smooth)
o Golgi apparatus
o Vacuole
o
o
o
o
o
-
-
Lysosome
Mitochondrion
Chloroplast
Cytoskeleton
Cilia and
flagellum
In these articles, you
must have a picture, a
description of the
organelles structure,
function, and location
in the cell, and a key
that labels the parts
of the organelle.
If you have trouble
coming up with a
layout for your
magazine, look in some
published magazines
and explore how they
are designed. Get
some ideas from the
professionals.
Requirements:
All of the following must be
taken into account when you
design your magazine.
1. Logical design and
layout.
2. Professional
appearance.
3. Neatness.
4. Correct and useful
information.
5. Sufficient content to
adequately explain the
function and role of
cells and organelles.
6. Citation of sources
for pictures and
information.
7. Correct grammar and
spelling.
OVER
8. Personal touches
(candid articles,
advertisements,
illustrations, letters
to the editor, etc).
Evaluation:
Your grade will depend on how
well you complete the above
requirements. Your grade
will be based on a rubric
that will be in the Media
Library as the due date
approaches. Also, an example
of a magazine will be placed
in the Media Library in the
next few weeks.
Due Date:
The project is due on or
before Friday, February 22nd.
2008. Do not wait until the
last minute to start your
project. I will come around
occasionally to check your
progress. Be working
throughout the six weeks.
Works Cited Requirements:
When developing and
presenting a research
project, students will
inevitably need to use
others’ information in their
writing. This use of others’
intellectual property
requires giving credit to the
original author, speaker, or
developer of the thought,
statistic, or information.
When no credit is given, it
is called plagiarism. Here
is some advice that will help
you avoid plagiarism:
“Plagiarism is using others'
ideas and words without
clearly acknowledging the
source of that information.
How can students avoid
plagiarism? To avoid
plagiarism, you must give
credit whenever you use:
 Another person's idea,
opinion, or theory;
 Any facts, statistics,
graphs, drawings--any
pieces of information-that are not common
knowledge;
 Quotations of another
person's actual spoken
or written words; or
 Paraphrase of another
person's spoken or
written words.i”
In other words, if you did
not know the information you
are presenting before you did
your research, you need to
cite the source of the
information. Information
must be cited using correct
MLA format.
Any information, quote,
statistic, image, or data
that is presented in your web
site and not cited will
result in a major (50% )
grade deduction.
