I welcome these and other criteria. I am pleased that the guidelines stress
the need for a substantial body of evidence about the child's special need.
Indicators are clear and specific for every stage. Good use of stepping
stones as a guide rather than foundation stage profile as stepping stones
are far more specific.
2. Do you agree with the proposed Criteria for Autism Spectrum
Disorders?

Particularly important to monitor and note strategies used prior to entry to
foundation stage. Will ASD require a medical diagnosis?
What does a long period of time mean?
Indicators are clear and specific for every stage.

Can be problems with intervention and/or diagnosis if parents do not take
their children to appointments. This means child's progress can be very
limited and educational settings can not access speech/language
programmes to support the child.
What does a long period of time mean?
Indicators are clear and specific and therefore a better judgement can be
made.
Shortage of S&L Therapists mean long waits for S&L Therapy
assessments. Could they be school based?
4. Do you agree with the proposed Criteria for Visual Impairment?

Needs to be something about the long term impact of a physical difficulty.
Lack of intervention may lead to the worsening of the condition.

Criteria particularly useful as there have been no guidelines before.
Again we need to work on all agencies working together.

These criteria are a sound basis on which to move forward.
In part 5 there is no (d) or (e). (This should have read (b) or (c) and has
now been corrected).
The criteria are clear which is helpful, however they seem harsh. Difficult
for a young child to have a big enough gap between their chronological
age and reading age to meet the criteria.
Need to get the dyslexia friendly classroom message over to all teachers
so that we don't have mild dyslexic children falling into SEN groups.
Criteria clear with specific guidelines. Very useful.
Query whether “In the case of a child for who English is an additional
language, evidence that language difficulties are apparent in their first
language” may mean it is harder for such children to receive help.
2. Do you agree with the proposed Criteria for Moderate Learning
Difficulties?
YES
NO
