Name: ___________________________ CSI Chicago Internal Assessment Resource 2016 Geography Achievement Standard 91241 (2.2) Demonstrate geographic understanding of an urban pattern Credits: 3 Version 2 ©Geostuff Ltd. Teacher Guidelines The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource. Teachers need to be familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement Standard Geography 91241 (2.2). The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes contain information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting the standard and assessing students against it. Context/setting: This activity requires students to demonstrate understanding of the pattern of murder in Chicago. This will include the spatial and temporal variations in the pattern of its location. Exploring factors and circumstances that contribute to this pattern and the temporal patterns might include ethnicity, gangs, gentrification and social issues. Understanding of a temporal pattern is required. The changes in the location of murders, the number of murders and the characteristics of those involved needs to be explained. The resource materials supplied with this assessment are sufficient for enabling students to answer successfully. If crime has been the focus of the school based learning programme then information from that learning could also be incorporated into answers and would be likely to enhance the quality of them. Pre-teaching of geographic concepts is required. Information about geographic concepts included within the assessment resources is that provided in the Geography Teaching and Learning Guidelines. Conditions: It is suggested that students be given at least three hours of in-class work to complete this assessment. The assessment is an individual one that is resource based. The students should have time to use all the resources in order to answer the tasks. It is recommended that students have access to the resource material to read prior to undertaking the assessment. They are also able to use their notes and information gathered during the unit of work to support their answers in the assessment. This assessment could also be used formatively as outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum. Each section can be taught separately with each section being taught as a sequence of teaching and learning about tourism. As one part is completed, this can be filed until all sections are completed, and then marked. Resource requirements: All required resources are supplied. The resource materials supplied with this assessment are sufficient for enabling students to answer successfully. If crime has been the focus of the school based learning programme then information from that learning could also be incorporated into answers and would be likely to enhance the quality of them. Additional information: It is expected that this assessment activity would be used at the end of a study unit on crime in Chicago – in particular the pattern of murder. Prior knowledge will help the students in understanding and answering the tasks but it is possible to complete this assessment by using only the resources attached to this assessment. Students should be familiar with the concepts and ideas involved with an urban pattern. ©Geostuff Ltd. CSI Chicago Achievement Standard 91241 (version 2) Demonstrate geographic understanding of an urban pattern Credits: 3 Student Instructions Sheet This assessment activity requires you to demonstrate geographic understanding of the pattern of murder in Chicago. Time allowed is three hours to write up plus two periods to complete your research from the resources provided. However, you may request more time if you need to, in order to read and process your resource material fully. Your teacher will have gone over the ideas and concepts involved in an urban pattern. The assessment consists of three parts. You must complete all the tasks. Use the spaces provided in this booklet for your answers. If you use any extra sheets of paper, ensure they are clearly marked with your name written and securely attached to the booklet. Within your answers include reference to elements, processes, events and perceptions related to the pattern of murder to help support your explanations. You should incorporate specific information about Chicago within your answers. Visual information in the forms of maps and diagrams can be incorporated within the answers to support them. You will be assessed for Achieved, Merit, or Excellence. Merit and Excellence will be achieved for responses which are clear, integrating one geographic concept and showing insight. It is recommended that you read the assessment resources and tasks very carefully before selecting the one geographic concept. Responses should show evidence of understanding in depth, both of the relevant geographical content and the geographical concept. Use of specific examples and geographic terminology is important. Use the resource materials supplied with this assessment - these are sufficient to answer successfully. If crime has been the focus of a class learning programme then information from that learning could also be incorporated into your answers and they’re likely to enhance the quality of your answers. You may include information from prior learning about urban patterns, Chicago gangs, murder victims and offenders, gentrification and social issues/theories relating to criminal behaviour to support your answers. ©Geostuff Ltd. Tasks This assessment requires you to complete two tasks both of which relate to urban patterns. Patterns: These may be spatial. They can be the arrangement of features on the earth’s surface; or temporal. Patterns may differ over time in recognisable ways. Geographic terminology for patterns may include concentrated, clustered, linear, random, dispersed, sparse, peripheral… In both tasks you are required to use one relevant geographic concept. Where appropriate you may use additional concepts. Some possible concepts (there may be others): Location: A place or position where something is located or could be located. Features are arranged on the Earth’s surface. Environments: May be natural and/or cultural. They have particular characteristics and features which can be the result of natural and/or cultural processes. The particular characteristics of an environment may be similar to and/or different from another. Change: Involves any alteration to the natural or cultural environment. Change is a normal process in both natural and cultural environments. It occurs at varying rates, at different times and in different places. Some changes are predictable, recurrent or cyclic, while others are unpredictable or erratic. Change can bring about further change. Perspectives: The way people view and interpret environments. Perspectives and values may be influenced by culture, environment, social systems, technology, economic and political ideology. They may influence how people interact with environments and the decisions and responses that they make. In both tasks ensure you use geographic terminology.
