PART I: Using a Microviewer (remember to insert the slide from right to left):
1. Set 19: Helpful Bacteria (
/6KU)
a) Looking at slide #6 of vinegar bacteria, what shape of the three types of bacterial shapes
that you know about are these bacteria?
_____________________
b) How are these bacteria useful to humans?_____________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
c) Looking at slide #7 :
Draw what you see in the circle below and label the cells.
Can you think of other foods where bacteria are useful? Name two.

2. Set 20: Harmful Bacteria (
Pathogens and Disease Unit
/4KU,
/3A)
a) Looking at slide #2, what do you think the structures are that are coming out from the
bacteria?
___________________________________________________________________
b) What would these structures be used
for?________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
f) Look at slide #6. This is Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that cause botulism – a very
severe and deadly type of food poisoning. The botulinum toxin is one of the deadliest toxins
known. Draw what you see in the microviewer. The round structures are spores. Label your
diagram.
g) Why are spores useful for bacteria?
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
h) How could you prevent food poisoning like botulism?

Set 240: Human Disease (
Pathogens and Disease Unit
/4KU,
/2A)
a) Look at slide #2. The cells on the right are those that cause tuberculosis. What organ do
these bacteria most commonly infect?
___________________________________________________________________
b) What conditions favour the development of tuberculosis? (remember the video on the
Russian prison)
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
c) Tuberculosis was close to eradication at one point. Why is it on its way back?

PART II: Using a Microscope: Bacteria Types (
/6C)
Remember how to set up a microscope. You place the slide on the stage, start on low power
and move to higher power, which is adjusted only with the fine adjustment knob.
Draw the three different shapes of bacteria that you see and label them with the names for
those shapes. The spirillium slide only has one type while the other slides (3 types) show all
three.
