This course introduces the role of registered nurse as care
provider and interprofessional healthcare team member. A concept-based approach introduces the novice
student to knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to develop clinical judgment in providing care for diverse

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. List steps of the nursing process and therapeutic communication skills in caring for diverse populations across
the lifespan.
2. Identify basic concepts of etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations related to nursing care for the
patient with simple disease processes.
3. Discuss a basic understanding of legal/ethical issues, evidence based practice, and roles and responsibilities of
the registered nurse in a diverse settings.
4. Accurately demonstrate nursing skills including physical assessment, medication administration, sterile
technique, and wound care.
5. Use critical thinking to identify a plan of care specific to clients with simple disease processes.
