Word Study Activities List
1.
Rainbow Words - Write your spelling words with a pen, pencil or crayon. Trace over the word
at least 3 times. Use a different color each time. Do this for each of your words.
2. Ransom Words - Look through magazines and newspapers to find the letters that make each of
your spelling words. Glue them together to make your spelling words.
3. Rhyming Words - Write words that rhyme with your words. These words do not have to have
the same spelling pattern as each of your words.
Example: If your word was “me”, you could write: flea, see tree, ski, tea, he
4. Word Frames - Draw a letter frame around each letter in your word. Pay attention to the tall
letters, short letters and letters with tails.
5. 3 Way Words- Choose 5 of your words. Write each words three ways- really BIG, really small,
and in your BEST handwriting.
6. Mountain Words- Choose 5 of your words. Write each word mountain style.

7. ABC order- Write your spelling words in alphabetical order.
8. “Blind” Spelling- Have an adult call out your spelling words to you. Write them down in your Word
Study notebook without looking at the word!
9. Poetry- Write a poem using at least 5 of your words.
10. Syllable Spelling- Write each word with a line between each syllable you hear.

MONDAY- Write all words 3 times each
TUESDAY- Choose 5 words and write complete sentences with each.
WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY- “FREE CHOICE” –choose any activity from the list and complete it in
your word study notebook. Study for your test. FRIDAY—Test day!
