2-Name 4 military changes that occurred during the war.
a-rifle instead of the musket—longer range, more accurate
b-trench warfare

d-use of rr as supply lines—destruction of rr lines to hurt the enemy
3-Name 3 changes that occurred for women during the war
-join the nursing profession—care for wounded in battlefield hospitals
-take over businesses and farms as most men were off to war or dead
-act as spies/help out the cause of war
4-What were Lincoln’s first 5 actions after secession occurred?
-naval blockade of coast to prevent Southern cotton from getting out & $
from getting in
-supervise elections in the border states with troops to “convince” the
border states to stay in the Union
-censorship of newspapers to make sure there isn’t criticism of the N
-increase the military, fund the war effort
-**use executive order to do this as Congress was not in session
-get rid of writ of habeas corpus so “enemies” of the North would sit in jail
and not know their charges—prevents agitation

the war?
Missouri, Maryland, Delaware, Tenn, KY—keep supply lines open along rivers
Also—Maryland & Delaware surround Washington DC
If they become part of the Confederacy, then Wash. DC is surrounded by
the enemy.
6-How does the North pay for the War? How does the south pay for the
war?
North—Bonds, Morrill Tariff, great econ expansion
South-bonds, print $--creates great inflation00
7-Relate the following terms:
Anaconda-squeeze the enemy –no supplies, no food—the enemy slowly dies
War of Exhaustion—similar to anaconda plan
“Everybody’s War”—all people rich or poor lost someone in the Civil War;
widespread misery/suffering because of the war
8-What actions do Britain and France take that upsets the Union?
Britain-supplies South with ships—laird rams,
CSS Alabama is really a British ship that destroys many Union ships from
1862-4
France takes over Mexico City briefly while the US is involved in Civil War
Goes against Monroe Doctrine—France trying to regain a foothold in N.

After the war, the reunified US tells France to get out of Mexico

John Brown’s Raid at Harper’s Ferry-Brown tries to encourage a slave
uprising by taking weapons from a Federal arsenal; hung for his crimes
Brooks vs. Sumner—2 Congressman who physically fight in Congress; Brooks
(SC) beats Sumner (Mass); shows the how violent the disagreement over
Kansas and slavery

14-Significant events at War’s end1864 Election—Lincoln winning the war so wins the election
Emancipation Proclamation-meaningless in terms of abolishing slavery
everywhere; abolishes slavery in Confed only; prevents European nations
from helping out the South
Gettysburg Address-eulogy for dead soldiers after the bloodiest battle;
