The 206 van was introduced into the UK market to replace the discontinued
106 van. The success of the 206 hatchback delayed the introduction of the
van into the market and it wasn’t until May 2000 that the van was introduced
21 months after the launch of the 206.
The Peugeot 206 van is built in Britain at the PSA Peugeot Citroën plant at
Ryton, in Coventry. This stylish and practical van has been developed from
the outstanding Peugeot 206 three-door passenger car.
In it’s market segment the 206 van, has been the best selling van in the UK,
for the last two consecutive years, in 2002 and 2003.
The van is ideal for users who require a stylish means of transporting light
loads as the 206 van has all the chic external design features of the 206
passenger car as well as a load capacity of 1130 dm3. It is highly specified to
offer drivers exceptional levels of comfort and driveability, combined with the
practicality of a van. The standard equipment on the vehicle includes:
 Power steering
 Plip operated central locking
 Electric windows
 Remote control radio / CD player
 Follow-me-home headlights
 Height adjustable steering column
 Height adjustable seatbelts
 Transponder immobiliser
 Height adjustable driver seat
 Sports front seats
 Full height grille bulkhead available as a no cost option
 Body protection strips and body coloured bumpers
 4 tie down hooks in rear load area and load area lamp
 Intermittent rear wash wipe
 High level third brake light
 Acoustic Pack
BODY DESIGN
The 206 van has been developed from the 3-door hatchback version of the
206-passenger car with steel side panels in lieu of rear side windows.
In October 2003 the 206 van became even more sought after, thanks to a
host of improvements to specification and equipment levels, making today’s
206 van an even more attractive option.
The specification and equipment improvements on the 206 van strengthen
further the minor styling modifications introduced in the spring of 2003. These
consisted of, at the front, clear double-reflector front headlamps and a
“honeycomb” grille mesh. At the rear, new single-colour tail lights, body
coloured number plate housing, sports rear bumper and a new large lion
badge above the number plate moulding, while inside, new trim specifications
were introduced.
As far as passive safety is concerned, the 206 van has been produced to
meet the European Directives for frontal impact and side impact; side impact
absorbers, beams and reinforced centre pillars are standard.
Turning to active safety, the main aim is to prevent accidents from happening
and the 206 van has benefited from Peugeot’s chassis, suspension and brake
expertise and its resulting dynamic characteristics, which set it apart from its
competitors.
LOAD SPACE
For a small van the payload of the 206 van is an impressive 526 kg exceeding
most vans in its class. This is combined with a load volume of 1130 dm3
resulting in a particularly useful and versatile small van.
The load area is particularly long at 1280 mm, offering flexibility for different
sizes and dimensions of loads.
SUSPENSION
The 206 van is, above all, a Peugeot and neither ride comfort nor handling
enjoyment has been sacrificed. The 206 van receives its own variation on the
basic 206 specification to accommodate the variation in weight distribution
that will be caused by the loads it is likely to carry.
The front suspension consists of a pseudo-McPherson strut, acting on a lower
wishbone with a linked anti-roll bar and hydraulic dampers set to a pressure of
3 bars.
The rear suspension consists of two rear suspension arms rigidly attached to
a cross member, with two torsion bars, an anti-roll bar, and two hydraulic
dampers. This setup is more efficient to package and intrudes less into the
load carrying space, thereby maximising the load area.
STEERING
Hydraulically operated power assisted steering is standard on the 206 van. It
provides a constant level of assistance at all speeds. The turning circle is
10.20 m between walls and 9.85 m kerb to kerb. The steering column has a
manual height adjustment, with a range of 35 mm.
BRAKES
The brakes on the 206 van consist of ventilated front discs, combined with
rear drum brakes.
TEVES MK70 ABS is fitted as standard, combined with electronic brake force
distribution (EBFD), which controls the brake force on each individual wheel
for enhanced stability, emergency braking assistance (EBA) and “hazard
warning light activation” where deceleration exceeds 8ms2.

ENGINE
At launch the vehicle was available with a 1.9 normally aspirated indirectinjection diesel engine as fitted to the 206 hatchback, 306 and Partner range.
This engine produced 71 bhp and a peak torque of 106 lb ft. In March 2002
Peugeot’s 1.4 litre turbo diesel HDi engine producing 68 bhp was added to
complete the range. The 1.9 diesel engine was then deleted in March 2003.
The 1.4 litre turbo diesel HDi engine is the first direct injection diesel engine
developed under the cooperative agreement between PSA Peugeot Citroën
and Ford Motor Company. The engine marketed as the HDi 1.4 by PSA
Peugeot Citroen and the Duratorq 1.4 by Ford, delivers improved fuel
economy, driveability and environmental benefits. It uses a new generation
common rail combustion and fuel injection technology, which significantly
enhances performance.
The engine produces 68 bhp at 4000 rpm and produces it maximum torque
figure of 120 lb ft at 1750 rpm providing power when and where you most
need it.
CLUTCH AND GEARBOX
The 206 van is fitted with a 5 speed manual gearbox with gear ratios chosen
to suit the torque delivery characteristics of the engine. The clutch is cable
operated.
A NEW GENERATION OF SAFETY SYSTEMS
The 206 van provides the occupants with a number of safety systems in terms
of impact protection such as:
 SMART front driver’s air bag, combined with pretensioning seat belts
with force limiters.
 Side impact absorbent door padding (front doors)
 Height adjustable front seat belts with web locks.
 Full height grille bulkhead – No cost option
 Driver and passenger seat belt unfastened audible and visual warnings
 Automatic door unlocking in the event of an accident
INTERIOR FEATURES
An even more luxurious interior
To enhance further its visual and tactile appeal, the 206 van uses jersey trim
for the roof lining and on the front windscreen pillar trims. In addition, the B
posts have a fine grain appearance.
The 206 van is fitted with Sports seats trimmed in grey “Alaska” cloth. The
driver’s seat is height adjustable and both front seats have height adjustable
head restraints.
PEUGEOT RT3 TELEMATICS SYSTEM
With new legislation on the use of mobile phones whilst driving it is now an
offence to operate a hand held mobile phone whilst
driving – including when stationary in traffic. To
help drivers keep safe, and to avoid a possible
penalty, Peugeot’s telematics system - RT3
previously available on the 307 and 807 ranges, is
now available as an extra cost option on the 206
van.
Peugeot engineers in association with Magneti
Marelli have developed a “radio unit” combining in
the same unit, a radio, CD player, navigation
system and GSM dual-band mobile telephone (900 and 1800 MHz). This
solution provides a cost effective answer to the need for the modern driver to
communicate, be directed and be entertained without the need to purchase
three individual electronic units with the associated costs.
The telephone has all the features of a standard dual band GSM mobile. A
microphone built into the roof console, enables the driver to talk to his caller
and the caller’s voice is then heard via the radio speakers.
As well as solving the problem of ‘communicating on the move’, and with text
messaging becoming increasingly popular Peugeot’s RT3 system even
removes the temptation to manually read text messages. Its voice synthesis
function enables SMS text messages received via the telephone to be read
out electronically for the driver to hear. This could be particularly useful for
the company driver on the move.
The system also combines other useful functions, such as a “one touch”
connection to Emergency Assistance and Peugeot’s Customer Care helpline.
For emergency assistance, pressing the red "SOS" button on the RT3 unit
connects the user to the local emergency services operator. The button
featuring the Peugeot lion emblem puts the user in contact with the Peugeot
Customer Care helpline, for information and advice relating either to the car or
to Peugeot.
The system can be operated either by a steering column control, or via voiceactivation. The voice command is activated by a short press on the button on
the end of the lighting stalk; a ‘beep’ then indicates that the RT3 is ready to
receive voice commands.
The unit is connected to a separate monochrome screen that displays written
messages and pictograms. Satellite Navigation featuring voice synthesis to
issue GPS route advice and street names is also a feature of the system and
the voice recognition also allows the playback of route details to an address
recorded in the directory (e.g. “guide to” / “home”).
Reliable and easy to use, the voice recognition facility allows the user to
operate the technological features in complete safety, as well as offering a
choice of seven different language options.
