Novel Technologies to assess Gut Health Claims for Carbohydrates Lubbert Dijkhuizen & Fons Voragen 14 juni 2011 Aanleiding • Darmgezondheid vanuit CH belangrijk en perspectiefvol in CCC 1 en 2 • Darmgezondheid vanuit microbiota en immuunbarriëre belangrijk en perspectiefvol in TIFN • Interactie met Danone, aansluiting STW Partnerprogramma • Synergie op een strategisch gebied Darmgezondheid in CCC • Developing and applying approaches to determine and monitor Carbohydrate digestibility in humans • Lactose replacement in calf nutrition (biomarkers of insulin resistance) • Dietary fibre with prebiotic effects (insulin response) • Food fibres and maintaining and improving immune barrier in the gut • Pre- and antibiotics for a healthy colon • New fibres: Starch/maltodextrins decorated with iso-maltooligosaccharides • Immunomodulation by oligosaccharides • Enzymatic modifications of prebiotics • Optimization of enzymatic GOS production Darmgezondheid TIFN • In this theme biomarkers for healthy gut function will be established and validated and the relationship between diet, gut microbiota and maintaining the gastrointestinal immune barrier will be investigated. The causal relationship between gut metabolism and its microbiota will be understood with specific attention to its influence on weight gain and energy metabolism. Strategies are being developed to characterise bioactive ingredients with regard to probiotic bacteria (or bacterial cell wall components) and dietary fibre. This theme is led by Prof. Wim Saris. STW-Danone Partnerprogramma The goal of this Partnership Program is twofold: • 1) to link different expertises and know how i.e. immunology, neurology, endocrinology, physiology, metabolism, (epi-) genetics to each other in order to sustain and understand the process from ingredients to specialized nutrition products with a health benefit. • 2) to understand the role of the gastro-intestinal tract in modulating neuro-immune interactions affecting metabolic disorders, diseases and health, with the aim to define and design the process from ingredients to specialized products with a health benefit.
