Costume Maintenance Assistant
Job Description
Responsible to:
Wardrobe Supervisor
Purpose of position:


Maintenance and repair of costumes and assistance in the preparation of
costumes for all performances either produced or presented by the Octagon
Theatre Trust Limited.
Occasional costume dressing and backstage assistance for performances.
Organisational structure:
The Costume Maintenance Assistant works as part of a small team with the Wardrobe
Supervisor and a Wardrobe Assistant. The role also works as part of the production
department to facilitate the creation and performance of Octagon productions.
Main Tasks:

Undertake the maintenance of costumes as instructed for Octagon Theatre
productions and visiting companies.

Ensure that costumes are ready for use according to pre-arranged deadlines.

Safe use of washing, steaming and ironing machines and appliances.

Safe use of substances used by the wardrobe department.

Implementation of Health and Safety requirements according to the Octagon
Theatre Trust Health and Safety Policy.

Maintaining a clean and tidy workspace.

Handling of cash for purchasing items as requested by the Wardrobe Supervisor.

Maintenance of records of expenditure.

Dress actors during performances, and assist with the smooth running of the
back stage during performances.

Cover the duties of the Wardrobe Assistant when necessary.

Provide extra support to the wardrobe department during production and
technical weeks.

Assist in the maintenance of the Octagon costume store.

Work in the best interests of the Octagon and in accordance with company
policies including health and safety, safeguarding and IT.

Be an effective representative of the Octagon in all situations and demonstrate
the highest level of customer care and service.
The main duties and responsibilities are indicative and not exhaustive. Other duties
may be necessary to fulfil the purpose of the post. This job description may be
periodically reviewed and revised in consultation with the post-holder.

Essential experience and skills

Experience of machine and hand washing costumes for theatrical productions

Experience of ironing clothing

Basic sewing skills
Essential attributes

Ability to work alone and as part of a team

Willingness to work irregular and unsocial hours



Experience of hairdressing or wig dressing

Full clean driving license

Salary:
£7.20 per hour

Pension:
The Octagon operates an auto-enrolment pension scheme through
NOW:Pensions in line with current government legislation.
Hours:
20 hours per week minimum. Flexibility is required as maintenance
requirements are different for each production. Further hours may
be necessary to meet the demands of each production, for both
maintenance and dressing duties. There are usually additional
hours over the Christmas period and during technical weeks for
each production. Additional hours will be paid at the standard
hourly rate. Evening and weekend hours may be requested,
between Monday and Saturday and occasionally on Bank Holidays.
Place of work:
Octagon Theatre, however work away from the Octagon in and
around Bolton may be required from time to time. Occasionally, the
Octagon produces shows in other theatres and staff might be asked
to work away from home for brief periods (with relevant expenses).
Holidays:
28 days (5.6 weeks) per annum (inclusive of Public Holidays). It is
often necessary for staff to take their holiday during periods on
which the building is shut to the public.
