Melissa’s benefit was a huge success! The attendance was phenomenal as literally hundreds came out on that cold rainy evening- Saturday October 23rd. Melissa made a brief appearance, she had to wear a face mask for protection against any air-born germs- her immune is gone. If she didn’t get a chance to say “Thank You”- please let me do that for her. And “Thanks Again” for making her benefit a huge success!! ____________________________________________________________________ What They Don't Tell You on Vaccine Labels Could Kill You and Your Child! Read about our efforts to find out what's NOT on some vaccine labels... what they don't tell you could kill you, or your child! Working in cooperation with Paul G. King PhD the Natural Solutions Foundation submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the labeling of a particular Vaccine, which appears to be even less informative than the labeling provided in the package insert for parenteral drugs and other injectable vaccines... What you can do: Learn how to make your own household cleaning products simply and easily using baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice. Try our recipes! RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—Despite the pink KFC buckets, fund-raising walks, and early-detection campaigns surrounding the issue, doctors and scientists still have very few clues about what exactly causes breast cancer. While the evidence suggests that a poor diet and lack of exercise play a strong role, there have been few studies looking at environmental factors such as water pollution and industrial chemicals. A new study suggests this oversight needs correcting. Researchers from the Silent Spring Institute, a Bostonbased nonprofit dedicated to studying the link between breast cancer and the environment, recently published a study in the journal Environmental Health that strongly hints at a connection between the disease and the household cleaning products we use every day. THE DETAILS: The study authors used data collected from a long-running study of women living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, between 1988 and 1995. The study group included 787 women who'd been diagnosed with breast cancer and 721 women who had not. All the women were asked standard lifestyle questions related to family history of breast cancer, diet, exercise, and socioeconomic status, as well as questions about the participants' use of several classes of cleaning products, including solid and spray air fresheners, surface cleaners, oven cleaners, and mold and mildew products. Turns out that breast cancer was twice as prevalent in women who reported using the highest amounts of all cleaning products, compared to women who reported using the lowest amounts. Looking at the data another way, women who reported using air fresheners and mold/mildew products were at higher risk of having breast cancer, especially those who used solid air fresheners and mold cleaners containing bleach. Surface and oven cleaners didn't appear to increase breast cancer risk. WHAT IT MEANS: The main point of the study was to show that the chemicals used in cleaning products, many of which are untested for safety, require closer scrutiny, says lead author Julia Brody, PhD, director of the Silent Spring Institute. "This is the very first look at the link between these chemicals and breast cancer in humans," she says. One of the questions asked during each interview was whether the women believed that chemicals could contribute to cancer. Interestingly, the subgroup of women who had had breast cancer and who said that chemicals contribute "a lot" also reported some of the highest levels of cleaning-product use. But the reason the researchers chose to look at cleaning products in the first place, says Brody, is because strong laboratory evidence shows that many endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) used in cleaning products mimic estrogen, and have caused breast cancer cells to proliferate. "We're interested in the chemicals that mimic estrogen because estrogen is a known breast cancer risk factor," she says. Air fresheners contain a variety of EDCs, including synthetic musks and phthalates. Mold and mildew cleaners contain EDCs such as triclosan (the primary ingredient in antibacterial cleaning products), phthalates, and petroleum-based surfactants (which help cleaners penetrate grime). All these chemicals are easily avoidable, says Brody. "With cleaning products, it’s easy to use soap, water, baking soda, and vinegar, and you should choose fragrance-free products as well," she says. But don't stop there. "It's very important for people to become involved in advocating for safer cleaning products," believes Brody. Here are some key safety and advocacy tips regarding household cleaning products: • Call your congressmen. The Safe Chemicals Act of 2010 was just introduced into the House of Representatives and would require companies to adopt the "better safe than sorry" approach—meaning premarket safety testing—rather than the "innocent until proven guilty" rule they now apply. Call your representatives and senators and urge them to support the bill. • Use up your existing supply... Continue to use whatever cleaning products you have on hand, says Brody, then replace them with safer alternatives when you run out. • …Then learn to make safe, nontoxic cleaners. When you need more cleaners, don't waste money on premade products when safer alternatives easily made from baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and even vodka are cheaper and just as effective to use. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008, 37,340 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, most of them in women. That's up from 33,550 in 2007. An estimated 1,590 people will die of thyroid cancer during 2008. Thyroid cancer is, however, considered one of the least deadly and most survivable cancers, and 5-year survival rates for thyroid cancer is almost 97%. Thyroid cancer is more common in younger people, and nearly two-thirds of those diagnosed with thyroid cancer are between the ages of 20 and 55. Thyroid cancer is one of the few cancers on the rise in recent years, with a growth rate of about 6% a year since 1997. Many experts believe that the increase is primarily due to greater use of thyroid ultrasound, which is better able to detect previously malignant thyroid nodules that, in the past, likely went undetected. The Thyroid Neck Check To underscore the importance of early detection, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) encourages Americans to perform a simple self-exam they call the "Thyroid Neck Check." Examining your neck can in some cases help you find lumps or enlargements in the neck that may point to thyroid conditions, including nodules, goiter and thyroid cancer. To detect a thyroid abnormality early, or lumps that may indicate potential thyroid cancer, follow these steps to perform your own "Thyroid Neck Check:" 1. Stand in front of a mirror 2. Stretch neck back 3. Swallow water 4. Look for enlargement in neck (below the Adam's Apple, above the collar bone) 5. Feel area to confirm enlargement or bump 6. When in doubt- make that Body, Mind & Soul Consultation with us- and let us figure it out. _____________________________________________________________________ Drawing In and Letting Go Stress builds the moment we try to do more (or feel like we should be doing more) than we have time to actually give. As we cross the threshold from "I can give this" to "I have to give this in order to succeed, even though I have nothing more to give," we become trapped in a cycle of giving out until we burn out. Granted, sometimes we all push it a little bit, to get that presentation done, or to take on a project that asks one more late night of us than we'd like. We have kids, which can be as draining as it is joyous; or we say yes to relationships that cycle into their own challenges, like illness or emotional struggle. Even if what we do is our life's work, and we love our interactions with others, there is still no way to be everything for everyone. In yoga, prana, or life force, is also the drawing in that which nourishes us. Apana, literally down breath, is also letting go of things that are potentially toxic. For example, an inhalation is prana, an exhale, apana. Eating healthy food is prana, and excreting the waste created by that same food is apana. Yoga, first and foremost, is a practice that bring us into a state of inner growth and transformation. It comprises conscious choices you make in every moment that lead you toward an experience of harmony--the balance between taking in what serves you and letting go of what doesn't. Knowing this, you can look around and see where you're being nourished and where you're participating in that which takes a bite out of your ability to love your life and be free. Sometimes you'll be surprised by what you find. For example, you may think that offering your time to watch your neighbor's child once a week is an offering of support for her, and it is. However, what if those few hours are time you could, and need, to be spending on your own creative projects, or just taking a bath and a nap or a yoga class? Is there someone else in the area that could watch her child properly, or is it forever up to you? If you really think about your life, you may see places that you're taking up the space meant for someone else, and by not giving up your placeholder status (apana), you are actively blocking yourself from filling the spaces that only you were born to inhabit. It's a fine line, but once you get used to making space to move toward your best dreams, you'll see that the exact right person will step into the void you left behind. Trusting that it will happen, and gathering the courage to make a nourishing move, is a skill and a process. In the same way, in your yoga practice, seek out opportunities to bring in new energy and stop saying yes to old, limiting behaviors, or habits that aren't quite fitting you anymore. If you've always come up from Low Lunge into High Lunge with a supremely arched back, and you hold the pose with the front of your heart open wide but the back of the heart and the ribs frozen, and your back tight and cranky, perhaps it's time to move into the pose with new awareness. Try coming up by drawing in your belly and front ribs and waving up the front of the spine as well as the back. Now you're not giving everything away through the heart, but equally giving out and giving in. In each moment, you can ask yourself: "Is this choice serving my health and happiness or moving me away from it?" When you step into your own power whenever possible (hint: it's always possible!), you'll create a wave of wellness, vitality, and goodness that will optimize your experiences both on and off the mat. Plus, when you balance prana-apana in your daily practice, you're more likely to be sensitive during your whole day. That way, when the scales begin to tip toward draining, resistance-oriented decisions, you can more quickly pull back, choose again, and live with your inner tank on FULL more often than not. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Farm Raised Frankenfish??? On the Friday before Labor Day, despite limited and inadequate safety-testing, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that industrially-raised salmon, genetically engineered to eat constantly and grow rapidly are safe for human consumption - even though the FDA found that these fish contained elevated levels of growth hormones, including insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a suspected carcinogen. AquaBounty's genetically engineered fish will be the first genetically engineered animal commercially sold as food in the United States. Under current law, these Frankenfish will not be required to be labeled as genetically engineered, depriving consumers of their right to choose non-GE food. FDA's approval of AquaBounty's IGF-1 tainted salmon mirrors its controversial approval of Monsanto's genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in the 1990s. Although rBGH is banned in Canada, the EU, and on organic dairy farms, it is still injected into more than 10% of U.S. dairy cows. The milk from cows injected with rBGH, like genetically engineered salmon, contains higher levels of IGF-1. Elevated levels of IGF-1 in humans is linked to colon, prostate and breast cancer. _____________________________________________________________________________________ GOOD FOODS LIST Apples Protects your heart Prevents constipation Blocks diarrhea Improves lung capacity Cushions joints Apricots Combats cancer Controls blood pressure Saves your eyesight Shields against Alzheimer's Slows aging process Artichokes Aids digestion Lowers cholesterol Protects your heart Stabilizes blood sugar Guards against liver disease Avocados Battles diabetes Lowers cholesterol Helps stops strokes Controls blood pressure Smoothes skin Bananas Protects your heart Quiets a cough Strengthens bones Controls blood pressure Blocks diarrhea Beans Prevents constipation Helps hemorrhoids Lowers cholesterol Combats cancer Stabilizes blood sugar Beets Controls blood pressure Combats cancer Strengthens bones Protects your heart Aids weight loss Blueberries Combats cancer Protects your heart Stabilizes blood sugar Boosts memory Prevents constipation Broccoli Strengthens bones Saves eyesight Combats cancer Protects your heart Controls blood pressure Cabbage Combats cancer Prevents constipation Promotes weight loss Protects your heart Helps hemorrhoids Cantaloupe Saves eyesight Controls blood pressure Lowers cholesterol Combats cancer Supports immune system Carrots Saves eyesight Protects your heart Prevents constipation Combats cancer Promotes weight loss Cauliflower Protects against Combats Strengthens Banishes Guards against Prostate Cancer Breast Cancer bones bruises heart disease Cherries Protects your heart Combats Cancer Ends insomnia Slows aging process Shields against Alzheimer's Chestnuts Promotes weight loss Protects your heart Lowers cholesterol Combats Cancer Controls blood pressure Chili peppers Aids digestion Soothes sore throat Clears sinuses Combats Cancer Boosts immune system Figs Promotes weight loss Helps stops strokes Lowers cholesterol Combats Cancer Controls blood pressure Fish Protects your heart Boosts memory Protects your heart Combats Cancer Supports immune system Flax Aids digestion Battles diabetes Protects your heart Improves mental health Boosts immune system Garlic Lowers cholesterol Controls blood pressure Combats cancer Kills bacteria Fights fungus Grapefruit Protects against heart attacks Promotes Weight loss Helps stop strokes Combats Prostate Cancer Lowers cholesterol Grapes Saves eyesight Conquers kidney stones Combats cancer Green tea Combats cancer Protects your heart Helps stop strokes Honey Heals wounds Lemons Combats cancer Protects your heart Limes Combats cancer Mangoes Enhances blood Protects your heart flow Promotes Weight loss Kills bacteria Increases energy Fights allergies Controls blood pressure Smoothes skin Stops scurvy Protects your heart Controls blood pressure Smoothes skin Stops scurvy Combats cancer Boosts memory Regulates thyroid Aids digestion Shields against Alzheimer's Mushrooms Controls blood pressure Lowers cholesterol Kills bacteria Combats cancer Strengthens bones Oats Lowers cholesterol Combats cancer Battles diabetes Prevents constipation Smoothes skin Olive oil Protects your heart Promotes Weight loss Combats cancer Battles diabetes Smoothes skin Onions Reduce risk of heart attack Combats cancer Kills bacteria Lowers cholesterol Fights fungus Oranges Supports immune systems Combats cancer Protects your heart Straightens respiration Peaches Prevents constipation Combats cancer Helps stop strokes Aids digestion Helps hemorrhoids Peanuts Protects against heart disease Promotes Weight loss Combats Prostate Cancer Lowers cholesterol Diverticulitis Aids digestion Guards against ulcers Pineapple Strengthens bones Prunes Slows aging process Prevents constipation Rice Protects your heart Battles diabetes Strawberries Combats cancer Sweet Saves your Relieves colds Aids digestion Aggravates Dissolves warts Blocks diarrhea Boosts memory Lowers cholesterol Protects against heart disease Conquers kidney stones Combats cancer Helps stop strokes Protects your Boosts memory heart Lifts mood Phyto-estrogenic Calms stress potatoes eyesight _____________________________________________________________________________________ YOGA NIDRA Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of complete relaxation, holistically addressing our physiological, neurological, subconscious needs, where one achieves true relaxation.
