WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1918 Mr. Corbett U.S. History 3-4 The Great War Changes the World Forever Students Find Challenging Learning Objectives… After this unit you will be able to: When WWI erupted in August of 1914, few people imagined that the conflict would last as long and cause as much devastation as it did. This four-year war would come to involve more than 30 countries and cost the lives of millions of men. The landscape of Europe would be destroyed and the borders of the map redrawn. Three empires would fall and nine new nations would be created. Although the United States tried to stay neutral, it would eventually be drawn into the bloody conflict. The decision to enter the war forever changed America’s economy, society, and role in international affairs. The events and results of the “war to end all wars” continued to have a major impact on world history throughout the 20th century, planting the seeds of discontent that would lead to rise of dictators such as Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini; and into conflicts such as World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. “It’s a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war…But the right is more precious than peace.” -President Woodrow Wilson April 1917 List and explain the four major causes of World War One.
