Title or Proposal: Richard Wernick, Master Composer, Pulitzer Composer, in
Chamber/Composer/Cello Residency at USF
Faculty member: Scott Kluksdahl
Unit: School of Music
Abstract:
These funds will be used to bring Richard Wernick to USF, providing lodging and
transportation. These funds will also pay Mr. Wernick for one public lecture, for one
masterclass, and for coaching of his Double Duo (Cello-piano/Cello-Piano), the world
premiere of this piece.
B. Proposal:
Richard Wernick – in addition to Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt – is the sovereign and
major living figure in the compositional history of American music for the latter-half of
twentieth century composition.
The applicant commissioned Wernick’s Duo for Cello and Piano in 2001, premiered it,
and recorded it. Wernick has since written the “Double Duo” for Kluksdahl.
The applicant proposes that Richard Wernick’s presence on campus will benefit the cello,
piano, chamber music, and composition programs at USF. The focal point of his
residency would be the premiere performance of his Double-Duo for cello-piano/cellopiano. This work has not yet been performed. As is so often the way here at USF, we
would become the “birthing-ground” for yet another major composition, composer, and
collaboration with a major international figure.
Mr. Wernick’s residency would include one full lecture, a masterclass with student
composers, coaching for the Double-Duo, and his presence at the premiere of the DubleDuo at USF, featuring Scott Kluksdahl, with Naomi Niskala, along with chamber music
masters students.
