Activity Plan TEDU 390
Group: Hannah Leopold, Jaimi Hecht, Brittney Hidalgo
Class/Grade: Fourth Grade Activity Focus: Relay Race with Nutrition
(fats/proteins/carbohydrates; hydration; balanced meals) and Math (probability; multiplication)
Date: November 30, 2015
# of Students: 22 Location: (circle) Gym
Classroom
Field
Blacktop
Equipment: One hula-hoop, seven polyspots, nutrition food cards (~28), 7 paper/Styrofoam plates
Safety Concerns: Students need to be dressed appropriately for the activity (sneakers should be
worn at all times). Students need to be aware of personal and shared space while completing the
activity to ensure that no one runs into another student.
National Content Standards (NASPE, 2004)
1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills &
movement patterns needed to perform a variety of
physical activities.
2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts,
principles, strategies, & tactics as they apply to the
learning & performance of physical activities.
3. Participates regularly in physical activity.
4. Achieves & maintains a health-enhancing level of
physical fitness.
5. Exhibits responsible personal & social behavior that
respects self & others in physical activity settings.
6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment,
challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Virginia Standards of Learning – Mathematics
4.4 The student will
a) estimate sums, differences, products, and quotients
of whole numbers;
b) add, subtract, and multiply whole numbers;
4.13 The student will
a) predict the likelihood of an outcome of a simple
event; and
b) represent probability as a number between 0 and 1,
inclusive.
Virginia Standards of Learning – Health & Physical Ed.
4.4 The student will demonstrate positive
interactions with others in cooperative and
competitive physical activities.
a) Identify a group goal and the strategies needed
for successful completion while working
productively and respectfully with others.
4.5 The student will explain the nutrition and
activity components of energy balance.
a) Identify the number of calories per gram of fat
(9), protein (4), and carbohydrates (4).
Activity Plan TEDU 390
e) Explain the importance of hydration.
f) Compare different hydration choices.
Behavioral Objectives:
Affective: Upon completion of the activity time the student will be able to have a positive attitude
towards physical education and feel good when working with their peers as measured by their
participation in the activity and their disposition (smiling face, laughter, positive attitude).
Psychomotor: Upon completion of the activity time the student will be able to demonstrate motor
skills appropriate for their age group as measured by their ability to run and work with
manipulatives.
Cognitive: Upon completion of the activity time the student will be able to comprehend what
constitutes a balanced meal, the importance of hydration (as well as comparing/contrasting different
drinks), and have a basic understanding of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, as measured by their
ability to create a balanced plate by choosing appropriate food and beverage choices, and listing
how many calories fats, proteins, and carbohydrates have (all of which will be checked by the
teacher upon student completion of the activity).
Health Related Fitness: Upon completion of the activity time the student will be able to compete
in a relay race and run the length of the gym and back, as measured by their cardiorespiratory
endurance.
Activity Plan:
First we will divide the class into 7 groups (into their Activity Plan groups) and have them sit down
with their group behind their polyspot.
Then we will do a quick lesson on nutrition:
- What a healthy plate is composed of, and compare a healthy plate to a non-healthy plate (ex.
you need to have a mix of fruits, vegetables, starches, and proteins on every plate; etc.).
o Ask the class for some examples of each. (Ex. Chicken is a protein; rice is a starch;
broccoli is a vegetable; apples are a fruit.)
- The importance of hydration and do a quick comparison of different beverages (milk, soda,
and water).
- How many calories are in fats (9), proteins (4), and carbohydrates (4)
Then we will explain our activity:
- Seven groups of 3-4 students will each be given a paper/Styrofoam plate.
- The objective is for each group to fill their plate with healthy foods (one starch, one protein,
one fruit, and one vegetable) and grab a healthy drink (milk or water).
- In a relay race style, each group will send one member to run to the other side of the gym
and grab a food or drink from inside the hula-hoop.
o Each group can only send one member at a time and each person can only grab one
food or drink per turn.
Activity Plan TEDU 390
o The group will need to work together to see which food groups they have covered so
that they don’t get too many proteins, fruits, vegetables, starches, or drinks (they
should have one of each for a total of five items).
- Once a group has filled their plate with a healthy meal, they will sit down.
- The first group to create a healthy plate wins (but everyone wins by creating a healthy
balanced plate).
Then, we’ll do a quick math problem to get their brains going:
- If there are seven groups, and each group has to get five items each, how many items is the
class getting total?
- If there are seven different pictures of vegetables, and 40 items total, what is the probability
of you grabbing a picture of a vegetable when you run up to the hula-hoop?
Then the students will compete in the relay race.
Finally, once everyone has finished the relay race, we will do a brief summary/debrief of what the
class should have learned or gotten out of this activity, and ask if there are any questions.
