 The type of government in which people rule
themselves
 Rich landowners
 A government in which only a few people have
power
 People who had the right to participate in
government
 A leader who held power through the use of force
 A brilliant leader from 460 BC to 429 BC,
democratic leader
 Rule by a Few People
o Early Athens, kings ruled
o Then aristocrats took power, rich land
owners
o They also served as generals and judges
o Draco created a new set of HARSH laws
o Those laws were too strict, so Solon
created much less harsh laws
 The Rise of the Tyrants
o 546 BC Peisistratus, a tyrant ruler, took
power
o Tyrants were usually good leaders with
strong armies
o He brought peace and prosperity to
Athens
o He died and his son took over, tyrants lost
power and aristocrats returned
 Democracy under Cleisthenes
o All Athens had the right to participate in
assembly
o Every citizen had the right to speak his
opinions
o They voted in assemblies
o When it became to large, Athenians
selected citizens to be city officials



o Came to an end in 330 BC when they were
conquered by the Macedonian
o The ruler, ruled like a dictator
o The Athenians still came together in
assemblies to make laws, careful not to
upset the king

o All citizens participate directly in the
government
o Each vote counted
o US is too large for direct democracy to
work
Representative Democracy
o This is the US democracy
o We elected officials to represent us
o Senators and Representatives
o Our chosen representatives vote for us
