3.3 Test Review
Objective 3: Relate the properties of simple compounds to the type of bonding,
shape of molecules, and intermolecular forces. Generalize, from investigations, the
physical properties (e.g. malleability, conductivity, solubility) of substances with
different bond types.
Students will be able to complete the following process for the given molecules CH4,
NH3, H2O
1.
2.
3.

8.
9.
10.
11.
Write the number of valence shell electrons for each element in the compound
and calculate the total number of valence electrons for the given molecule.
Draw the skeleton structure for the molecule with each atom in the correct
position.
Show all bonding and nonbonding electrons with the appropriate symbols.
Add multiple bonds if appropriate.
Add brackets and ionic charge of appropriate.
Show resonance structures if appropriate.
Name the molecular geometry.
Draw the molecular geometry.
Identify bond angles.
Indicate bond polarity.
Indicate molecular polarity.
You will be asked to go through the same process for another molecule that will not be
known until the test is given. Practice molecules like NH4+, CO32-, and NO3-
