Human Biology Exam Outline June 2014
The following outline will advise you on what you need to know for your final exam in Human Biology.
Along with the biological information you learned you also need to be prepared to discuss the ethical
and emotional side of issues and topics we covered like organ donation, anorexia and bulimia,
smoking, and effects of sun. Please remember that this is not an exhaustive list. That is to say that
anything we have done during this semester is fair game 
UNIT 1 – Introduction to Human Biology
 Tools of a biologist
 Microscope – Parts and Functions
 Characteristics of living things
 Parts of a animal cell – structure and function
 Levels of organization. Know what tissues, organs, and systems are and provide an example of each.
 Different body systems in our body, and what they do.
UNIT 2 – The Skin
 Study your skin vocabulary for multiple choice questions.
 Know the five functions of the skin.
 Be able to label a cross section of the skin using a word bank.
 What are the different layers in our skin
 What is hair and nails
 What are tattoos? Types, how are they done.
 What are skin receptors
 Know basic facts about sun exposure and sun care products.
 Temperature and your skin
 Skin Cancer – types and how harmful
UNIT 3 – Skeletal and Muscular Systems
Skeletal System:
 Know all of the following about the skeletal system:
 6 kinds of tissues
 Structure of a bone
 types of joints
 the scientific names of each bone
 the function of ligaments and tendons
 Be able to label the human skeleton using a word bank.
 Types of fractures
Muscular System:
 Study diagrams of the muscular system (front and back view) to be able to label the diagrams using
a word bank.
 Know the three types of muscles and what their jobs are. (skeletal, smooth, and cardiac)
 Know how muscles work, and why they ache
 Types of strains
UNIT 4 – Digestive System and Nutrition
 Know the six essential nutrients and the role each nutrient plays in the human body. Study notes
copied in class.
 Know the four basic food groups and why it is important to eat food from all four groups.Be able to
label a diagram of the human digestive system using a word bank.
 Know the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion.
 Know the parts of the digestive system (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine,
rectum, and anus) and what each organ does during the digestive process.
 Know the accessory organs (salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder) and how they
contribute to the digestive process.
 Know the following terms: peristalsis, chyme, bile
 Trace the passage of food from the mouth to the anus and be able to discuss the breakdown of
nutrients in the various sections of the digestive system.
 Know the functions of the digestive system.
 Know the parts of a tooth.
 What is diabetes
UNIT 5 – Circulatory System and Respiratory System
Circulatory System:
 Be able to label the human heart using a word bank.
 Know the three types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. Also know what their
function is
 Know some basic facts about the circulatory system like how much blood does an average person
have and how many times the average heart beats per minute.
 Know the components of blood and the basic facts about each component
 Know the four blood types and who can receive from and donate blood to each type.
 Know what varicose veins are.
 Blood disorders – Anemia, and Hemophilia.
 Know what is blood pressure and hypertension.
 How does our body fight diseases
 Know how the circulatory system and the respiratory system work together.
Respiratory System:
 Know how to label the human respiratory system using a word bank.
 Study the notes you copied in class which explain the function of each part of the respiratory
system
 Know the two jobs of the respiratory system and the two gases that are exchanged.
 Be familiar with some of the harmful effects of smoking, and marijuana.
 Know what is asthma?
UNIT 6 – Nervous System
 Know what the Central and Peripheral Nervous systems are.
 Know the types of Neurons
 Be able to label a diagram of a Neuron, and know the function of the parts.
UNIT 7 – Reproductive System
 Know the parts of the male and female reproductive system and what they do
 Be able to label a diagram of the male and female reproductive systems
 Understand what the different hormones do in both males and females.
 Explain how fertilization occurs
 Know what is genetics, dominant and recessive traits, genotypes and phenotypes, and human
variation
