Worksheet # 3
Biology 3201
Created by David Stinson
Name :
1.
With the help of figure 12.6 on page 395 and the definitions below, label the following
diagram of a typical neuron.
axon - the long extension of a neuron
that carries nerve impulses away from myelin sheath - the fatty substance that surrounds and
the body of the cell.
protects some nerve fibers
axon terminals - the hair-like ends of node of Ranvier - one of the many gaps in the myelin
the axon
sheath – impulses jump from node to node resulting in
cell body - the cell body of the
faster transmission
neuron; it contains the nucleus and
nucleus - the organelle in the cell body of the neuron
other cell organelles
that contains the genetic material of the cell
dendrites - the branching structure of Schwann's cells - cells that produce myelin - they are
a neuron that receives messages
located within the myelin sheath.
(attached to the cell body)
2.
Place an arrow along the diagram to indicate the direction that impulses travel long the
neuron.
3.
What type of nerve cell would carry impulses from the scent receptors in your nose to
your brain?

4.
What type of nerve cell would carry messages from your brain to the muscles in your
leg?
