An ethical thinking on sustainable management ──from A Sand County Almanac to Land Ethic and 921 Earthquake Professor Hsu Yu-ming Ecology was not regarded as important study until the masterwork A Sand County Almanac was written by Aldo Leopold in 1947. First of all, we will mention to the purpose of building national parks. For the reason of sustainable management, establishing national parks aims to satisfy both ecological conservation and tourist industry. It is a compromise way, but too hard to get both duties. U.S. faced this paradoxical problem many years ago, so does Taiwan now because we imitate from their mode of national parks. For example, both Yangmingshan National Park and Kenting National Park are facing the pollution crisis for economic advantage. And Hsuehpa National Park is managed by each district for protecting environment along with guests’ entertainment. Resulting from human beings’ egoism on ecological conservation, the taking from man’s profits sustainable management becomes such a tough business. Leopold referred to many innovative opinions like the harm of some trivial, useless beings’ extinction in his book. Only by giving up the fallacy that man is the conqueror or land owner in the ecosphere; then perhaps we may get ecological conservation as far as possible. Another ecologist Reachel Carson published a famous book Silent Spring in 1962. She stated the aftermath of human beings’ ruining the environment due to man’s short-sightedness. Plus, man would suffer the consequences by his own doing. Professor Chen Yu-feng published his book Land Ethic and 921 Earthquake. Unlike these two ecologists, he expressed Leopold’s and Carson’s viewpoints with more conservative tone. In addition, the main issue is people’s different faiths and behaviors on treating other living things while talking about environment ethic and land ethic.
