Over the summer you will read an important piece of environmental literature and analyze the author’s environmental ethic. You are to choose one of the following books: Silent Spring by Rachel Carson* A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold* Ishmael by Daniel Quinn Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan Stuff: The secret life of everyday things by John Ryan and Alan Durning. The Future of Life by E.O. Wilson* No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process by Colin Beavan *These books are available to be checked out at school. Once you have made your selection and read the book, you are to write the following response. Your final document should be roughly two‐three pages in length (typed) and is due the first day of school. (1) Title of the book you chose. (2) What led you to choose the book you did? What was the "other" book you "almost" considered? (3) Write a reflective piece regarding the book. Did the book impact you in some way? How so? What, if any, emotions were evoked during the reading? After the reading? (4) What do you think is the author’s environmental ethic? Why did he/she write this book? (5) Summative concluding paragraph. Would you recommend this book to a classmate? Why or why not? Welcome to APES! We will begin the year by discussing the idea of an environmental ethic. You will eventually be tasked to explore and write your own environmental ethic.
