It also provides whatever background theory, previous research, or formulas the reader needs to understand to perform the experiment (or solve the problem).] Methods and Observations Materials A 100-mL beaker Small pot for boiling water 1 250-mL beaker Measuring cup Watch glass Stove Teaspoon Mass scale Lye Stirring rod White Vinegar Safety goggles Several leaves of red cabbage Rubber cleaning gloves Water Procedures: I put two cups of water into the pot with cabbage leaves. I then boiled the leaves for 5 minutes. I used my mass scale to measure the mass of my 100 mL beaker. I then added 60 mL of vinegar to the beaker. With my gloves on, I measure out a teaspoon fo lye and put it on the watch glass. After 5 minutes of boiling the cabbage, I allowed it to cool for a few minutes. I then poured about 50 mL of the solution in the pot into the 250-mL beaker. I allowed the solution in the 250-mL beaker to cool. Once cool enough to handle, I poured about 10 mL of the solution into the 100-mL beaker. The vinegar in the beaker turned pink. This is due to chemicals (anthocyanins) that come from the cabbage leaves. I then placed the stirring rod in the beaker so that it stood in the beaker. I then placed the watch glass on top of the beaker so that it covered the mouth of the beaker. I placed the beaker with the stirring rod and watch glass covering it on the scale and measured the mass of the total assembly. After measuring the total mass, I dumped the lye into the vinegar and stirred the solution with the stirring rod. I made sure the stirring rod stayed in the solution. The liquid changed colors Rest the stirring rod in the beaker and keep the watch glass covering the beaker. Measuring the mass.
