Sheet 07— Temperature Homeostasis Name: __________________________________ The human body has a natural ability to maintain a balanced internal environment when exposed to changes in its external environment. This maintenance of balance is called homeostasis. This activity aims to identify how the body maintains homeostasis when exposed to change. Task: Cut out and use the labels on the last page, to construct a flow diagram, representing the body’s response to external temperature change. Arrange the labels in the space below in two loops and use arrows to link them together. Make a mind map with either Bubble.us or Text2Mindmap and document in you blog. Sheet 07— Temperature Homeostasis Name: __________________________________ Maintained Homeostasis Sheet 07— Temperature Homeostasis Name: __________________________________ Hypothalamus recognises a rise in internal temperature, initiates a bodily response. Stimulus: Lowering of external temperature Stimulus: Increase of external temperature Circulatory system: increased heart rate, blood vessels expand, more blood sent to the skin. Circulatory system: Constricts blood vessels, limits blood flow to the skin Hypothalamus recognises a lowering of the internal temperature back to acceptable limits. Stops the response mechanisms. Low Temperatures High Temperatures Hypothalamus recognises a rise of the internal temperature back to acceptable limits. Stops the response mechanisms. Muscular system: stimulates the contraction of muscles to induce shivering, Nervous system: activates sweat glands to release sweat. Maintained Homeostasis Hypothalamus recognises a lowering of the internal temperature, initiates bodily response.
