WORLD HISTORY UNIT 2
THE AGE OF ABSOLUTE MONARCHS, EXPLORATION
AND ENLIGHTENMENT (1453-1750)
This unit will finish the first ideological section of the course. Thus far, we have seen
the dominance of the Muslim world over the Christian, as exemplified by the Muslim
victories during the Crusades, the taking of Constantinople, and the invasion of the Ottoman
Turks which reached as far as Austria & Hungary in Central Europe. We now see European
nations organizing politically under powerful absolute monarchs, and beginning to spread
their wings by exploring overseas.
While the cultural foundations for this “Rise of Europe” lay in the Renaissance and
even further back, it is during this period beginning in the 2nd half of the 16th century
(1500’s) that we see the rise of Modern European nation-states that we know today as Spain,
Portugal, Britain & France.
We will examine the rise of these nations and their Monarchs through studies of the
monarchs themselves (and their politics), and the exploratory accomplishments of their
nations which gave rise to Europe as a global power. We will also study the cultural and
scientific achievements of this post-renaissance world, and the impact that these
achievements had on other elements of culture (customs & traditions, religion, politics,
economics, technology, etc.).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES – Exploration and Enlightenment
*Note: the L.O.’s get larger and more significant from 1 to 5.
1) Identify the cultural causes of 30 years war, its effects on different elements of
culture, and how the war could have been avoided.
2) Identify the fundamental ideas of absolute monarchy and describe how Monarchs
we’ve discussed ran their countries (successes and failures). Compare their systems
of government to each other, and to our government today.
3) Compare the exploratory accomplishments of the 5 major European Naval powers,
and the impact of exploration/colonization on the culture of the colonizers and the
places they colonized.
4) Assess the comparative power of the major cultures of the world in 1500, and
identify the causes of that change in favor of a shift from Asian domination, to
relative equality, to European domination.
5) Identify the major personal contributors to the Scientific Revolution and their
contributions. Be able to explain the impact each discovery had on the culture of
the time and how the discovery changed culture from that point on.
6) Connect the ideas of different thinkers, philosophers and scientists to one another,
and explain the cultural significance of their connections.
IN ADDITION TO DAILY LESSONS AND HOMEWORK LISTED ON THE
