Propaganda
Project
<<<Join the German Army

What is Propaganda? Propaganda is
any form of “advertising” that is designed to change the mind of or influence
millions of people. Just like a Ford commercial trying to get you to buy the Ford
Focus or a T.C.C. radio spot convincing people to sign up for classes, propaganda
attempts to change your mind and convince you to perform action.
During war, a government will use propaganda to promote the war effort.
These will fall into four categories:
1. Manage yourself---Manage what you do or say. If you know secret
information…keep it to yourself….. you never know who is listening. If you live
near the coast, use your blackout curtains. Eat less food,
drive your car less, use your bike, fix your pants rather
than buy a new pair. Behave patriotically in
general……be a good German, Italian, American or Brit!!!
How about this poster aimed at workplace slackers>>>>>
Notice, you almost feel bad taking a sick day because Tojo
is begging you to. How dare you take a day off while
Americans are fighting for your way of life in the Pacific!!!
2. The Enemy is EVIL!!! ----This type of
propaganda paints our enemy as a monster
who needs to be stamped out of existence.
Often, they tie in a need to “Build more
Weapons”, “Buy more War Bonds” or “Enlist in the Army” among
others.
3. “Let’s Do Our Part on the Homefront”---Just because
you’re not in uniform, doesn’t mean you can’t help
your country win the war. This type of propaganda
often promotes more factory production, women
working in war industries,
recycling war materials,
planting victory gardens etc.
Have a look at this German
World War Two poster
urging German women to
recycle clothing. Notice how
happy she is to help the
country win the war!
How about this Japanese poster urging workers to put
more hours to help them beat us?
4. “What our country wants and needs” How about a
propaganda poster describing what your selected country wants or needs.
Basically, why did your country go to war in the first place?? For example,
Germany wanted living space and needed natural resources to fuel its war
machine. Maybe the United States wanted a little sweet revenge for the Pearl
Harbor attack and also wanted to help our European friends while the French
were simply hoping to get Germany off their soil and survive the war.
The Project:
 You poster must incorporate one or more of the four above categories.
 Must have a Picture. You may cut and paste a picture from the internet, but
it CANNOT BE A PICTURE FROM A PROPAGANDA POSTER. A picture of a
German soldier, factory, housewife cooking dinner……….whatever…….. is
good! Just don’t steal a picture from another propaganda poster.
 You must have a SLOGAN! Slogans must be in the language of the country
represented. Use Google translator to create your slogan.
 No larger than a Half Poster Board………computer paper size is ok!!!
 COLOR!!!
 You must use the entire paper. Don’t leave blank spaces!!
 You may complete your poster using Google Docs.
 Best poster(s) in each class will win a Awesome “Prize” (Belvita)
