INTRODUCTION
- In this exercise we will be examining the heart and
brain of sheep. Because sheep are mammals just as
humans, they possess a four chambered heart and
similar brain structure to that of humans.
Date
3. Describe the appearance and job or function of these
parts of the heart using available references; record in
Table 1.

OBJECTIVES
 Observe and identify the chambers of the heart
 Observe and identify the regions of the brain
 Make connections between sheep and human organs

PROCEDURE
PART A – The Heart
1. left ventricle Examine the preserved heart that has been
placed in the dissecting pan.
2. Locate the following parts using Figure 1 as a guide:
Coronary blood vessels, Superior Vena Cava, Aorta,
Pulmonary Vein, Pulmonary Artery

PART B – Chambers of the Heart
1. Locate the Four Chambers of the heart: Left atria, Left
ventricle, Right Atria, Right Ventricle
2. Use scissors to cut through the side of the pulmonary
artery and continue cutting down into the wall of the
right ventricle. Be careful to just cut deep enough to go
through the wall of the heart chamber.
3. Using your scissors, continue to cut open the heart. Start
a cut on the outside of the left atrium downward into the
cutting toward the apex to the septum at the center
groove.
4. Use scissors to cut into the side of the pulmonary artery
and cut down into the wall of the right ventricle.
5. Locate and observe the following: Tricuspid Valve,
pulmonary valve, mitral valve
PART C – THE BRAIN
1. Using the Brain given presented to you. Make an incision
at the midline, separating the right and left lobes.
2. Pull apart the two halves and observe the major
structures of the brain
3. Locate the following structures using Figure 2 as a guide:
4. Describe the location and job or function of the major
structures of the brain using available references;
record in Table 3.
