ESSENTIAL UNIT 5 (E05)
(Change Over Time)
(June 2011)
Unit Statement: Essential unit five looks, in depth, at the science of evolution.
Topic should be linked with E06 Classification. Topics covered include geologic
history and the evolution of the biosphere, genetics of evolution, and the origin of
life, as well as studies of specific theories, how they were developed, and how
scientific evidence is gathered.
Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed)
1. The Student Will describe pre-Darwin hypotheses on evolution and the social
climate that made Darwin reluctant to publish his work. ML16.1, 16.2
2. TSW describe the conditions under which natural selection occurs 16.3
3. TSW evaluate the evidence for change in morphology from the fossil record,
presence of homologous and vestigial structures, embryology, and molecular
biology. 16.3, 16.4, 19.1, 19.2
4. TSW identify the role of genes in evolutionary change 17.1, 17.2, 17.4
5. TSW explain how the molecular clock is used to determine timing in speciation 17.4
6. TSW identify the main sources of genetic variation in a population and explain
how different factors affect genetic equilibrium17.1, 17.2
7. TSW evaluate the hypothesis for the origins of life and relate it to evidence shown
in scientific investigations 19.3 (see suggested reading under Suggested
Materials)
8. TSW view videos 1 & 2 (required videos) and examine various models related to
the origin of human life (including intelligent design and evolution) by
creating an evidential argument using the videos and other available
resources. (see Suggested Materials) 26.3
9. TSW apply the Scientific Method in a variety of ways where they focus on 1 or 2
areas of the process.

Suggested assessments and activities may include but are not limited to the following:
1. Create a vocabulary list from their reading or in-class discussions.
2. Pearson provides extensive work sheet that could be used as reinforcement for the
lesson in each chapter. These lessons are fully editable and should be use as
reinforcement not in place of classroom instruction and hands on activities.
3. Perform laboratory work as outlined in Lab Manual for Chapters 16-19
4. Additional labs found in the back of Pearson Laboratory Manual are very good to
use as open ended labs.
5. Students are encouraged to debate different sides of the origins of life on earth.
Evidence for their arguments must be based on quantifiable evidence (quantifiable
evidence is part of the scientific method).
6. Teacher generated or published assessments. (Teachers are encouraged to generate
their own assessment questions that require the higher order thinking skills of
synthesis and evaluation to distinguish mastery at a ‘B’ level from mastery at an
‘A’ level. Ideal questions would require the successful student to combine
knowledge and skills across the unit. Teachers may use in-text critical thinking
questions (modified or as-is), ideas from sidebar teacher notes, or ideas developed
from personal knowledge and experience.)
