YEAR 10 SCIENCE HOMEWORK – 3 / EVOLUTION
Cell Division
Cell division is the process by which cells multiply during the growth of tissue or organs. The type
of cell division involved in the growth, repair and replacement of the body is called mitosis. The
cell division which produces the reproductive cells is called meiosis.
The number of chromosomes in each body cell is called the diploid number. In normal body cells
chromosomes occur in pairs.
The process of mitosis ensures that new body cells have the same number of chromosomes as their
parent cell to possess all the necessary coding instructions.
Meiosis is the kind of nuclear division that prevents the doubling of the number of chromosomes
at fertilisation.
Chromosomes carried in the sperm from the father are called paternal. The chromosomes in the
ovum from the mother are called maternal.
