Unit 2: Electricity and Using a Digital Multimeter Vocabulary
Alternating Current – An electrical current that moves in one direction and then the other.
Ammeter – Instrument used to measure the flow of electric current in a circuit in amperes;
normally connected in series in a circuit.
Amperes – The unit of measurement for the flow of electric current.
Complete Circuit - A circuit that has a power source, a load such as a light or motor to power
and a ground point.
Conductor – Any material that can form a path for electrical current.
Current – The movement of free electrons in a conductor.
Direct Current – Electric current that flows steadily in one direction but resists it in the other.
Ground - A connection between an electrical device and a large conducting body.
Insulator - An insulator is a material that resists the flow of electric current.
Multimeter – An electrical test meter that can be used to test for voltage, current, or resistance.
Ohm – Unit of measurement for resistance to the flow of electric current in a given unit or
circuit.
Parallel Circuit – An electrical circuit that has two or more resistance units wired so that current
can flow through them at the same time.
Series Circuit – A circuit with only one path through which current can flow.
Voltage - The rate at which energy is drawn from a source that produces a flow of electricity in a
circuit; expressed in volts.
Voltmeter – Instrument used to measure voltage in a given circuit.
