Integrating the National Geographic Five Themes of Geography http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/themes.html Theme #1 – Location Absolute Location – You can enter either Longitude or Latitude coordinates or street addresses in the search box. When viewing and navigating the Longitude and Latitude are displayed on the bottom left - Relative Location – You can choose a location and zoom in or out to visually see the relative position to other landmarks. You can also use the ruler tool to measure distances between two locations Theme #2 – Place To identify the physical features, you can use the tilt (above the compass rose to mimic a 3D effect. You can turn on or off several of the layers available in Google Earth. Consider : o Panoramio – see photos contributed for the area o Wikipedia – links from wikipedia to learn more about it. o Roads – See roads and road names o Borders and Labels – Turn on or off the lines separating political boundaries o Weather – Current weather conditions overlayed on the location Theme #3 – Human / Environment Interaction Having a bird’s eye view can help to understand human development and interactions with area. Within the Layers, if you turn on the terrain layer and use the tilt, then you can understand the impact of rivers and mountains. Theme # 4 – Movement Interacting with the Roads layer can help to identify how people move based on the geography. You can also see features such as the airport (large flat area), DeltaPort (built road to deep enough water), Ports in protected harbours. In addition to working with your local region and the maps, you can download additional files from the Google Earth Community such as http://earth.google.com/gallery/ there is one there for international flights. Theme # 5 – Regions Interacting with the Borders and Labels layer, you can turn on / off International borders as well as internal borders in countries. If you turn on Second Level Admin districts, then you can see things like the Vancouver Regional District.
