Samaresh Chawdhury son and disciple of the illustrious Sangeet Acharya Amaresh Chandra Chawdhury was born on 8th
September 1955. Samaresh later sharpened his rare skills under the able guidance of the great maestro Bharat Ratna
Pandit Ravi Shankarji since 1984. He is a rare combination of a brilliant performer and a highly sought after Guru.
BIOGRAPHY
Pandit Samaresh Chawdhury son and disciple of the illustrious Sangeet Acharya
Amaresh Chandra Chawdhury was born on 8th September 1955. Samareshji later sharpened his rare skills under the
able guidance of the great maestro Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankarji since 1984. He is a rare combination of a brilliant
performer and a highly sought after Guru.
Gayaki
Gifted with a mellifluous and resonant voice he has a rare and enviable command over his medium of expression. His
detailed and flawless manner of bringing out the rare nuances of ragas in the “Vistar” and “Barhat” portion with
glimpses of Dhrupad gayaki which he has mastered at a very young age during the talim under his illustrious father. This
exquisite swargams and tans with wonderful mix of “tantrikari” (instrumental style) adopted from Pandit Ravi Shankar
punctuated with meticulous “tehais” give an insight of his vigorous training.
All these along with influences of Masters of Yesteryears namely Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan Saheb, Ustad Amir Khan
Saheb, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan Saheb, he has created a unique style of his own which is second to none.
Talim & Lineage
Initial training in Dhrupad and Khayal from his father Sangeet Acharya Amaresh Chandra Chawdhury a disciple of Ustad
Dabir Khan Saheb who was the nephew of Ustad Wazir Khan Saheb, a direct descendant of Mian Tansen who
established the Senia Gharana.
Advanced training under Pt. Ravi Shankar a disciple of Ustad Allauddin Khan Saheb who trained under Ustad Wazir Khan
Saheb of Senia Rampur Gharana.
Navarang Institution of Performing Arts
Navarang, the institution of performing arts in the field of Indian classical music, in vocal as well as instrumental was
founded by Late Sangeet Acharya Amaresh Chandra Chawdhury in 1970. The enlighted torch is now being borne by his
eligible son Pt. Samaresh Chawdhury with his humble efforts.
Navarang is a sincere effort on the part of friends and music lovers to promote and rejuvenate the cause of classical
music, thus carrying forward the previous generations emanating from Rishis and Vedas.
Navarang, the istitution of performing arts has been honestly attempting to promote young and brilliant talents in both
vocal and instrumental arena. Since the last three and half decades Navarang has been organizing concerts at different
parts of West Bengal and sometimes at adjoining states also.
In the early 1970s Late Hirabai Barodkar, Late Ustad Istiak Hussain, Late Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan, Late Smt.Tanima
Thakur and others have lended their voices and enriched Navarang. In the subsequent years world renowned maestros
like Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, Pt. Kumar Bose, Pt. Sanjoy Mukherjee, Pt. Sujit Saha, Sri Subhankar Banerjee, Pt. Samaresh
Chawdhury, Pt. Aloke Chattopadhay, Ustad Mansoor Ali Khan, Bidusi Purnima Chaudhury, Pt. Jayanta Bose, Pt. Debu
Chaudhury, Pt. Debaprasad Chattopadhay, Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Prof. Joydeep Ghosh, Ustad Roshan Ali, Late
Ustad Mehfooz Khan to name few have added flavours to the concerts alongwith the promising young scholars of
Navarang and other youngstars in different field of Indian classical music.
Number of young scholars of Navarang has established themselves in their respective field. Some of them are national
scholars and also perform in AIR and Doordarshan. The most senior scholar and student of Pt. Samaresh Chawdhury,
Miss Rupa Mukherjee is National Scholarship rewardee from Human Resource Ministry, New Delhi in 1999. She is B high
artist of AIR and Doordarshan and is also senior trainer of Navarang institution.
Mousumi Chakraborty (Talukdar) is very promising young scholar of Indian Classical music. She stood first in All India
Radio Music competition in all over India in 1998 and was awarded with Navaras Record award in 1999 from Mumbai.
Sarmistha Ghosh (Ganguli), Pahi Baishya, Purba Patitunda, Sanjukta Das, to name few have been awarded with National
Scholarship from Human Resource Ministry, New Delhi.
Sandip Nag is one of the talented and outstanding young performer and senior disciple of Pt. Samaresh Chawdhury.
Mainak Das has been acquiring taleem in Kheyal and Harmonium from Pt. Samaresh Chawdhury. He has successfully
accompanied his present Guru and many other eminent artists like Pt. Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pt. Jagadish Prasad, Pt.
Aloke Chattapadhyay in several prestigious classical music festivals and in National programmes of AIR and Doordarshan.
He is also an excellent composer and music director.
Each year Navarang organize Gurupurnima and annual conference where young talents get an opportunity to nurture
their skills along with the world renound artists.



Kumari Romi Ghosh has been awarded National Scholarship in Kheyal from Human Resource Ministry, New
Delhi in the year 2010.
Kumari Purba Patatunda has been awarded National Scholarship in Kheyal from Human Resource Ministry, New
Delhi in the year 2008 and also stood 1st in Kheyal competition of All India Radio in the year 2010
Sanjukta Das has been awarded National Scholarship in Kheyal from Human Resource Ministry, New Delhi in the
year 2009 and also stood 1st in Thumri competition of All India Radio in the year 2010.
