Classical Civilizations
Historical Background
While civilization began in the fertile river valleys of Asia and Africa, the first
“classical civilizations” emerged along the Mediterranean Sea in ancient Greece
and Rome. In Asia, the Chinese evolved into a classical empire under the Han
Dynasty. Each of these classical civilizations were shaped by their geography,
developed important contributions in government, and created many other
cultural achievements that are still used today.
Writing Task
Discuss and evaluate the development of ONE of the following classical civilizations:
Greece, Rome, or Han China.
In your response, be sure to discuss the following:
 The role geography played in shaping the culture of the classical civilization
 The new ideas of government that were developed
 The cultural achievements of the civilization, such as those in science,
mathematics, entertainment, architecture, trade, etc.
(Documents A, B, C are related to ancient Greece; Documents D, E, F are related

This excerpt is from Pericles’ Funeral Oration, given in Athens around 430 B.C.
“Our plan of government favors the many instead of the few: that is why it is
called democracy… For social standing, advancement is open to everyone,
according to ability. While every citizen has an equal opportunity to serve the
public, we reward our most distinguished citizens by asking them to make our
political decisions. Nor do we discriminate against the poor.”

The following excerpt is from “Following Ancient Footprints: Exploring the
Northern Silk Road” by Pamela Logan (Asia Magazine, March 1994)
“The Silk Road [was] actually many road…originating in thousands of towns and
cities all over eastern China. The routes threaded their way west, skirted the
deserts of Turkestan, [crossed] of some of the world's most impenetrable
mountains. If the bundles of precious silk survived crossing these formidable
barriers..they then descended to the Indian Subcontinent. Here the Silk Road
swiftly multiplied again, spawning hundreds, then thousands of diverging tracks
that brought Chinese goods to Persia, Arabia and Europe, then returned the
treasures of those faraway lands to eager Chinese [buyers].”
