Section 2 - Unit Objectives
1. Understand how chemical energy is stored in living things.
2. Describe the difference between ADP and ATP.
3. Know the role of ATP in the cell.
4. Know the overall equation for photosynthesis and understand where each step of the equation is taking place
in the plant cell.
5. Understand how the sun’s light is used by the plant to generate chemical energy.
6. Know the role of pigments in the photosynthetic process.
7. How is the choloroplast involved in photosynthesis and where are the light and dark reactions occurring within
the organelle.
8. What is the electron transport chain and how does it work to faciliate ATP formation? Where is active
transport taking place?
9. Differentiate between the light and dark (Calvin Cycle) reactions in the plant.
10. Know what factors may affect photosynthesis rates in plants and how plants have evolved to deal with these
factors.
Section 3: Outside Class Assignments
Thoughtfully do each of the following assignments. Include all your reasoning and work wherever it
seems appropriate. Due dates for each assignment will be given in class.
Outside Class Assignments:
1. Read section 8-1 and answer the following questions:
a. What is the ultimate source of energy for plants?
b. How do autotrophs obtain energy?
c. How do heterotrophs obtain energy?
d. What is ATP and what is its role in the cell?
e. Where is energy stored in the bonds of ATP?
f. Sketch a molecule of ATP.
2. Read sections 8-2 and 8-3 in your textbook and answer the following questions:
a. What is the equation for photosynthesis?
b. What does photosynthesis require to take place?
c. How do plants gather the sun’s energy?
d. What is the absorption of light graph below (next page) telling you about the wavelengths of the
sun’s light the chloroplasts are able to absorb? HINT: Is there only one color range that the pigments can
absorb or are there multiple color ranges?
e. What are the grana and what are the pigments organized into within the membrane?
3. Define the terms in PHOTOSYNTHESIS vocabulary packet.
4. Fill in the overview of photosynthesis worksheet.
