Revision Techniques
READ
Revision is not just about reading your notes. There are many ways
of revising such as mind maps, games, re-writing etc. Follow the
instructions below and do the tasks in the BACK OF YOUR JOTTER.
DO
1. A mind map is when you read a passage and put the important
points into a spider format like this:
Read the following passage on microbes and put the information
into a mind map (HINT – the word in the bubble should be the word
microbes)
There are three types of microbe – virus, fungi and bacteria. Most
are harmless but some can cause disease, for example TB is caused
by bacteria, athletes’ foot by a fungus and the flu by a virus. Our
immune system protects us from getting ill. On the surface of
microbes are chemicals called antigens. White blood cells in the
blood patrol the body and spot microbes. When a microbe is
detected they release proteins called antibodies which attach to the
microbe’s antigens and render it harmless.
Some microbes are useful in industry and are used to make useful
things such as bread, beer and cheese. They do this by a process
called anaerobic respiration or fermentation. Yeast is a fungus used
in bread and beer production. The Carbon Dioxide produced makes
bread rise and the ethanol makes beer alcoholic.

Flash cards are a great way of learning words and meanings. One A4
sheet of card is cut into squares (enough to cover all the words you
want to learn) Once the cards are cut the word is written on one side
of the card and the meaning on the other. This allows you to test
your knowledge of the words on your own.
Do
2. Look at the following words and meanings. Match the word up
to the correct meaning and once finished create flash cards of
your words.
Yeast
Thread like structures found in the nucleus of
cells that contain your genes
Cancer
A hormone injected by diabetics and produced
through genetic engineering
Screening
Glucose → Carbon dioxide + ethanol
YEAST
The step in sewage treatment where sewage
travels through a fine mesh to remove large
particles
Insulin
Enzymes
When cells division goes wrong and a tumour is
formed
Catalase
Proteins which speed up chemical reactions and
remain unchanged
Chromosomes
A fungus used in bread and beer production.
Fermentation equation
The enzyme that turns hydrogen peroxide into
oxygen and water
