Endangered Species Brochure Project Due: Tuesday, April 12th There are literally hundreds of endangered species, including the burrowing owl from “Hoot”, throughout the United States. Endangered Species range in variety from producers to top carnivores. They can be flowers, fish, mammals, or any other living thing that is at risk of going extinct if something is not done to prevent it. We will be looking at some endangered species that are located right here in Florida. Your Assignment: o Choose an endangered species: We will be choosing our endangered species in class. You will have the opportunity to choose one not on the list if you wish. o Make a professional informational brochure about an endangered species advertising your species and why it should be saved, using an online program like Microsoft Publisher. o Briefly present your species to the class on Wednesday, April 11th and Thursday, April 12th. Helpful Vocabulary: herbivore carnivore omnivore producer consumer decomposer food chain food web precipitation biome climate population density competition predator/ prey niche habitat global warming greenhouse effect limiting factors population size biotic potential Works Cited (APA format): You must have at least 5 sources. Two of these sources need to be from a printed source (Encyclopedia, book, magazine). • Son of Citation Machine: citationmachine.net Endangered Species Brochure Guidelines: Include: (Use as a checklist) General Information about the Species: At least 4 appropriate pictures throughout brochure Catchy title on front of brochure Scientific Name Common Name What taxonomic Class is your species in? (ex: mammal) Ecosystem Information: Habitat: What Biome would you say it lives in? What country or State does it originate? Describe the necessary climate it must have. List its limiting factors. Niche: Role in food web: what eats it and what does it eat? How often does it eat? How does it get its food? Reproduction: Does the animal have mating rituals? How long is the gestation period? How many offspring are normally produced in one cycle? Past and Current Threats that have lowered population size Why is the population endangered? What is killing this species? When was it added to the Endangered Species list? What are the current efforts and solutions to support the species that are working? Why do we need to do more? Conservation Plan Paper (on separate paper, 2-3 paragraphs): President Obama has given you 100 million dollars and the permission to write one new policy (law) to help save your species from extinction. (Make sure to explain WHY?) Step 1: How are you going to immediately stop the population from decreasing? First thing to do? Step 2: What law (policy) will you put into place that will help your species’ survival rate. (can not be ‘don’t kill this species’ (that already exists)) Step 3: What will the punishment be for breaking the law (fine, jail time, community service: explain) Step 4: Describe a 10 year plan that you think will help your species population size increase in the years to come. Step 5: Describe what kinds of things you will need to use your 100 million dollars on to complete the goals of your 10 year plan.
